The complete schedule for the 55th edition of the Forum section at the Berlin International Film Festival has been unveiled. This part of the festival showcases films that are innovative and push the boundaries in experimental and avant-garde cinematography.
As a film enthusiast, I’m excited about the 2025 selection, which is all about highlighting modern cinema that transcends both the niche and the mainstream. It serves as a vibrant barometer, capturing the essence of our times.
The program showcases time’s examination through Stefan Hayn’s 2024 (released in 2023), which contrasts political Berlin against private Bavaria, blending film and painting as perspectives for analysis. Cao Yiwen’s AI-inspired What’s Next? raises a thoughtful question about the future, while Su Hui-Yu’s The Trio Hall offers an eclectic mix with historical dictators performing on stage.
Approximately half of the films at this year’s Forum are documentaries, with some notable ones being Tatiana Fuentes Sadowski’s “The Memory of Butterflies,” which reconstructions Indigenous slavery and colonial wrongdoings, Lee Anne Schmitt’s “Evidence,” which delves into dark money and neo-conservative ideology in the United States, and Nayibe Tavares-Abel’s “Colossal,” which examines the political history of the Dominican Republic.
2025, according to Wurm, will be a time that offers solace and understanding for individuals whose spirits have been crushed by impersonal systems and inflexible governments.
As a game enthusiast, I’ve got quite the diverse gaming lineup here. From immersing myself in the semi-autobiographical German drama “Janine Moves to the Country,” by Jan Eilhardhart, to losing myself in the surreal world of Elmar Imanov’s “The Kiss of the Grasshopper,” and even bracing myself for the chills of Kazakh horror film “Cadet,” directed by Adilkhan Yerzhanov. Lastly, I’ll switch gears with “Fwends,” a female-buddy mumblecore feature from Australian director Sophie Somerville. Each game offers a unique experience that keeps me on my toes and ready for the next level!
