Berlinale Unveils New Selection Committee

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has traveled the globe attending countless international film festivals, I am thrilled to witness the transformation of the Berlin International Film Festival under the new leadership of Tricia Tuttle. The revamped selection committee, comprised of industry veterans and experts, promises to deliver a diverse and captivating lineup for next year’s event.

The restructured Berlin International Film Festival is progressing, as its newly appointed director Tricia Tuttle announced a revamped four-person selection team and an expansion of their advisory and delegate network on Thursday.

The freshly formed panel includes seasoned professionals in the field, such as Mathilde Henrot, who is a festival programmer and producer, film critic and programmer Jessica Kiang, Jacqueline Nsiah, a consultant for festivals and culture, and Elad Samorzik, previously the artistic director of the Jerusalem Film Festival.

I’m teaming up with Michael Stütz and Jacqueline Lyanga, who were recently appointed as co-directors of film programming in preparation for the 75th anniversary Berlinale next year. We’ll be collaborating with Tuttle to select films for the Competition, Berlinale Special, and the fresh Perspectives section.

To enhance its knowledge base, the Berlinale has enlisted several consultants. Jin Park is one for genre movies, while Rowan Woods focuses on television and series content. Ana David, Kate Taylor, Toby Ashraf (who specializes in German and LGBTQIA+ programming), and Rabih El-Khoury (with extensive knowledge in Arab cinema) are involved in the general selection process. Jenni Zylka is specifically tasked with German film programming, particularly nurturing new German talent and film schools. Additionally, Ashraf’s expertise lies in German and LGBTQIA+ programming, while El-Khoury has a rich background in curating Arab cinema.

Tuttle additionally selected representatives from around the world to seek out movies and serve as emissaries in diverse locations such as Latin America, Southern Asia, the United States, and Eastern Asia.

Previously leading the London Film Festival, Tuttle steps into the role vacated by co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariëtte Rissenbeek. Beginning from the upcoming edition, scheduled for February 13th to 23rd, Tuttle will commence her tenure as the new director.
