Growing criticism is being directed at CBS News’ parent company Paramount, as they consider a $20 billion settlement in a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has cautioned the network that such a move could encourage the government to persistently harass the media.
In the correspondence dispatched to major stockholder Shari Redstone on Tuesday, Sanders hints at rumors suggesting a potential agreement between Paramount could be reached to settle the case, with a possible value of up to $75 million.
Or simply:
Sanders refers to speculations in a letter sent to Shari Redstone on Tuesday, implying that Paramount might strike a deal worth up to $75 million to resolve the case.
As a supporter, I’m penning down my thoughts: Giving Trump millions for his baseless lawsuit won’t make him retreat from his battle against the media and free press. Instead, it will empower him to intimidate, coerce, and muzzle CBS and other courageous media outlets that dare to cover subjects Trump dislikes.
Recently, legal representatives from both parties convened to explore a potential agreement. For Paramount, it’s advantageous to resolve the case as a settlement could pave the way for regulatory approval of their upcoming merger with Skydance. It is thought that Redstone favors this resolution strategy.
According to many legal experts, the lawsuit against CBS News for editing an interview with Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign is likely to be thrown out due to common practices in the journalism industry regarding interview editing. Donald Trump is proposing a unique argument that claims this editing by CBS News violates Texas’ law against deceptive advertising and unfair competition, which protects consumers from misleading practices.
In March, Paramount contended that the case should be dismissed because their editorial decisions are protected as free speech under the constitution. Additionally, they contested Trump’s decision to file the lawsuit in a federal court in Texas, which has gained notoriety for its role in advancing conservative legal matters. Given that CBS is based in New York, Trump’s legal team opted to sue in the Northern District of Texas. This choice raised concerns that Trump may be strategically selecting favorable judges by submitting his complaint at a court where a judge likely sympathetic to his case might preside.
In a court filing, Thomas Riney (representing CBS) stated that this lawsuit is a violation of the First Amendment and lacks both legal and factual support. Essentially, Trump aims to penalize a news organization for making decisions about their news content that he finds objectionable, which is protected under the Constitution.
As a gamer speaking up here, let me clarify my stance: I find myself in agreement with Senator Sanders and many legal experts. This lawsuit, in my view, is a direct assault on the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment. In my opinion, it’s baseless and lacks any substance whatsoever.
The letter issues a caution about intensifying attempts to suppress freedom of expression should Paramount decide to resolve the lawsuit. It refers to the government’s bullying tactics towards the media and individuals who criticize Trump.
Sanders advocates for the protection of press freedom and our democratic system, urging us not to succumb to this potentially harmful shift towards authoritarian rule,” or
“In his writing, Sanders calls for upholding freedom of the press and democracy. He warns against giving in to this threatening move towards authoritarianism.
Besides CBS News, other media outlets have also been under scrutiny. Previously, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman, Brendan Carr, called for an investigation into Disney and ABC due to claims of biased practices, including potential racial quotas, among other issues.
Amid settlement discussions, Trump continues to criticize the network.
Last week, I penned down my thoughts about our lawsuit against 60 Minutes, CBS, and Paramount, expressing that it’s a remarkable triumph. On Truth Social, I stated, “This case is a clear-cut victory for us! They have manipulated and deceived the American public in ways unprecedented in the political realm.
Sanders was accompanied by Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut), Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island), Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts), Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) and Peter Welch (D-Vermont).
