As a die-hard Batman fan who’s seen more than my fair share of caped crusader adventures, I must say that the tales I’ve just recounted have left quite an impression on me. From the gripping storytelling of “The Long Halloween: Part 2” to the timeless wisdom of “Batman Beyond,” these stories have not only entertained but also enriched my understanding of the Dark Knight and his world.
Batman’s appeal is timeless, as he has consistently been among the top two beloved DC characters, alongside Superman, since his debut in Detective Comics #27 by artists Bob Kane and Bill Finger. The constant demand for fresh Batman content has resulted in a new movie or series about the Gotham vigilante being released approximately every year or two. Currently, there are over 50 Batman productions available to fans, with more on the horizon.
Fans of Batman can look forward to having a lot of content to enjoy, but the abundance might pose a challenge for those who demand nothing short of perfection in their films and series. Fortunately, Rotten Tomatoes simplifies the task of sifting through this mountain of content.
As a cinephile eager to bypass the less-than-stellar films such as “Batman & Robin” and “Batman v Superman,” I’d recommend you cast your gaze upon superior projects that have earned perfect scores on aggregator sites. Simply take a gander at the list provided below, then scour your preferred streaming platforms (primarily Max in this instance).
10 Batman vs. Robin (2015)
In the story of ‘Batman vs. Robin’, it’s clear that Bruce Wayne faces a significant challenge in fatherhood as his son, Damian Wayne, strongly disagrees with Batman’s no-killing policy. Consequently, Damian decides to forge his own path and make his own decisions.
I must admit, I’ve been pondering over his ambition for autonomy. Given the current control of Gotham by the Court of Owls, a ruthless gang notorious for their savage and bloodthirsty crimes, it seems ill-advised at best. Their methods range from brutal beatings to cold-blooded murders, leaving no room for mercy. Upon hearing about Damian’s dissatisfaction, they’ve shown interest in exploiting his discontent, attempting to persuade him into their fold.
Some of the Best Fights in the DC Landscape
As a longtime fan of Batman, I must admit that I was initially hesitant when I heard about this new film version of Gotham. Having grown up watching the Caped Crusader in various iterations throughout my life, I had certain expectations for what a gritty and morally ambiguous portrayal of the city would look like. However, after viewing the movie, I can confidently say that it exceeded all my expectations.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’d say Forbes spotlights some truly remarkable close-ups during the climactic battle in this latest animated DC release, showcasing Batman in intense hand-to-hand combat that ranks among the best I’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, Cinema Crazed hails it as a strong addition to the DC Universe Animated Universe, boasting swift action, well-balanced pacing, and captivating character development drama.
9 Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019)
The unexpected fusion of worlds, Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is proving to be a delight for fans everywhere. In this thrilling crossover, Batman, Robin, and Batgirl join forces with their turtle counterparts to thwart the nefarious plans of Ra’s al Ghul and Shredder. It appears that these two villains have formed an alliance; Ra’s will grant Shredder eternal life by giving him access to the Lazarus Pit, while Shredder will build a device capable of scattering TCRI mutagen across Gotham City, transforming its inhabitants into mutants.
The Unlikely Team-Up Works Just Fine
The film, starting with an eerie, suspenseful scene of a power generator being stolen, builds up to a chilling conclusion. Part dreamlike, part humorous, this stylish animated movie is a fascinating piece of art. Some notable reviews for it can be found at Blu-ray.com and Horror Queers, as cited by Rotten Tomatoes.
The first person praises it as an “exciting spectacle filled with lovable characters and significant battles, providing fans with the light-hearted yet intense journey they’ve been anticipating,” while the second commends it for its “impressive blend of diverse animation techniques.”
8 Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012)
In the story “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1,” even after a long retirement, Bruce Wayne – known as Batman – finds himself drawn back into action. After spending a decade sipping coffee served by his butler Alfred Pennyworth, he feels compelled to put on the cape once more. However, at age 55, Bruce is not as agile as before, and Gotham City has undergone significant changes. A new police commissioner dislikes vigilantes, while a menacing gang of mutants shows little regard for the elderly.
Doing Justice to the Source Material
The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1 functions as a tantalizing prelude that surpasses the main event in some ways. It’s like a delicious appetizer that stirs anticipation. According to Rob’s Movie Vault, this first installment serves as a sort of warm-up act before the grand finale, with the review stating, “This initial part feels more like clearing one’s throat before the operatic conclusion,” and adding, “The tempo seems rushed and brisk.”
A Stream on Demand article evaluates the adaptation against its source material, finding it to be a bold interpretation, if not the daring approach Miller’s groundbreaking work truly deserves. The piece suggests that such an adaptation, which showcases both the graphic design and writing prowess of Miller, is at the very least intriguing, and in the best-case scenario, surprisingly unanticipated.
7 Batman: Bad Blood (2016)
In the film “Batman: Bad Blood,” it is Bruce Wayne who goes missing. Consequently, his associates become quite busy. Alfred steps in to take care of things while Robin takes to the streets, apprehending criminals albeit not as effectively as his mentor. Meanwhile, Batwoman assumes the role of detective, meticulously examining all available evidence with the intention of uncovering the truth about the disappearance of the city’s most esteemed hero.
No Batman, No Problem
Featuring outstanding vocal performances across the board, Batman: Bad Blood is a sparkling, modern-day treasure packed with suspense and engaging dialogue. As a Starburst review points out, this movie successfully reminds us of why we adore Batman and his universe so deeply, even though Batman himself isn’t the main focus.
1. It’s quite clear that Batwoman and Alfred are so captivating that they often overshadow Batman, making one forget he ever existed. Meanwhile, Aisle Seat stirs up the ongoing Marvel vs DC debate, asserting that in the animated realm, DC reigns supreme. The article states, “While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is often praised, DC’s animated features are far more authentic, and this movie serves as proof.” Essentially, it argues that DC’s animation work is more natural and organic compared to Marvel’s offerings in the cinematic universe.
6 Batman vs. Two-Face (2017)
In the tale “Batman vs. Two-Face,” Hugo Strange’s misguided experiment leaves Harvey Dent with profound mental and physical wounds. As he grapples with the repercussions of this incident, he gains a new perspective on his existence. The left side of his face is horribly disfigured, leading him to abandon his former path of upholding justice and instead embrace a life of lawlessness. This transformation compels Batman, reminiscent of the character portrayed in the ’60s TV series, to pursue Dent with determination.
A Perfect Nod to the ‘60s
As a die-hard Batman fan, I can confidently say that the latest animated Batman film surpasses numerous other DC productions when it comes to setting and, most importantly, character development. Many online reviews have highlighted additional aspects worth appreciating.
As a longtime fan of DC comics, I must say that the new animated film has truly exceeded my expectations and left a lasting impression. Not only does it surpass its predecessor, but it may very well be the best DC animated film to be released in 2017, in my opinion. The storyline is captivating, the animation is top-notch, and the voice acting is exceptional.
5 Batman: The Long Halloween: Part One (2021)
In the animated movie “Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One”, a notorious serial killer known as Holiday is on the prowl. As his name suggests, this murderer chooses to strike only on holidays across various years. Being quite methodical, Batman faces a challenging task in tracking him down. He casts suspicion upon several individuals, ranging from the Joker to Carmine Falcone and his associates, but so far, he hasn’t been able to find concrete evidence against any of them.
Jensen Ackles is Batman
In a style reminiscent of film noir classics, “The Long Halloween, Part One” delivers a gripping narrative that showcases Batman’s detective prowess at its finest. Despite dealing with intense, sometimes painful emotions, this ambitious story is presented with a touch of warmth and a reassuring message that even in the darkest times, Batman will find a way to make things right. Furthermore, Jensen Ackles’ portrayal as the main character adds an extra layer of appeal, given the frequent humor surrounding his “Batman voice.”
In a review by Lamplight, they found the movie to be visually impressive, boasting a novel voice cast that effectively balances out the parts that seem repetitive and overly familiar. On the other hand, Steady Cut’s assessment was more concise, expressing that while the film may not be flawless, it at least seems aware of its unique charm.
4 Batman: The Long Halloween: Part Two (2021)
In the sequel titled “The Long Halloween, Part Two”, Batman persists in his intense probes, this time collaborating with Harvey Dent and Jim Gordon. The assassin is systematically eliminating members of the Falcone clan who are engaged in a fierce feud with the Maroni clan. To the general public and media, these appear as mere gangland slayings, but Batman suspects there’s more to it. He delves deeper to uncover the truth. Simultaneously, an escape from Arkham Asylum results in an influx of villains wreaking havoc on the city streets.
A Worthy Sequel
Sequels often fail to live up to their predecessors, especially when the original movie is nearly perfect. Fortunately, The Long Halloween, Part Two delivers on chills, surprises, and excitement just as effectively as the initial release. The narrative unfolds with an enticing unpredictability that keeps you captivated from start to finish.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve got to say that among numerous impressive critiques, Flickering Myth stands out by straightforwardly stating that this film offers an exceptional Batman encounter. If you combine it with Part One, it becomes one of the finest live-action Batman movies ever made. Similarly, SuperHeroHype’s review shines brightly. They conclude that The Long Halloween: Part 2 packs a powerful punch subtly and gradually creeps up on viewers.
3 Batman Beyond (1999 – 2001)
Over time, the passage of years eventually affects everyone, and in the series Batman Beyond, an older Bruce Wayne finds himself unable to carry out his former feats as he’s now weakened and in his seventies. Living a life of solitude at Wayne Manor with his loyal dog, Ace, he manages to avoid venturing out much since most of his adversaries are either deceased or imprisoned. Fortunately for him, Gotham City has transformed into a vast metropolis where technology assumes many responsibilities. Eventually, after some persuasion, Bruce decides to pass the mantle of Batman onto Terry McGuiness, a 16-year-old youth.
The New Generation Does Well
As a die-hard DC fan, I must say that one of the most exhilarating productions from their stable is none other than “Batman Beyond.” This series is packed with pulse-pounding action sequences and intricate plots that are synonymous with Gotham’s rich storytelling. Entertainment Weekly aptly dubbed it as “the smartest cartoon kicking,” emphasizing that it will make you grab a hot cup of coffee, pushing aside any nearby kids, just to fully immerse yourself in the fresh fun and non-stop action it offers.
As a devoted moviegoer, I couldn’t help but admire the depth of its intricately crafted characters, the captivating villains, and the blend of the adrenaline-pumping action, exhilarating adventure, and tantalizing mystery that echoes the essence of Batman so beautifully.
2 Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)
The movie titled “Batman: Under the Red Hood” opens with the Joker’s ruthless killing of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Later, a new enigmatic figure known as Red Hood appears on the scene. This individual harbors no affection for Batman or Gotham City’s criminals. As the Red Hood embarks on a rampage, Batman is compelled to intervene. Eventually, he discovers the true identity of this vigilante, an astonishing revelation that shocks everyone involved.
Something for Everyone
“Under the Red Hood” caters to both younger and mature viewers, with an energetic and clear storyline for kids, but also featuring intense violence and complex themes that adults can appreciate. The Deep Focus Review supports this observation in their article, stating that the film provides a single viewing experience that is relatively disposable for most audiences.
Groucho’s Review asserts that “Batman: Under the Red Hood stands out among the DC Universe Animated Original Movies for its vivid, thrilling action and deep emotional depth.”
1 Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000)
As a seasoned movie critic, I firmly believe that “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker” stands among the elite Batman films ever produced. This masterpiece seamlessly connects the acclaimed “Batman Beyond” TV series with the concluding chapter of “The New Adventures of Batman & Robin.”
One of the Most Intriguing DC Storylines
Under the guidance of director Curt Geda, and featuring a sophisticated, spine-tingling script penned by comic writer Paul Dini, Return of the Joker stands out as a top-tier, engrossing psychological thriller. This story would have been a game-changer for the DCEU if it had been implemented, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case with Snyder and his team.
At Your Movies, they concur with the sentiment that this animated film could have served exceptionally well as a live-action Batman movie, due to its surprising quality. Over at Apollo Guide, the team was captivated by how far Terry’s world has developed. Their review suggests that if the concept of Batman Beyond initially seemed like a mere gimmick, it has since transformed into one that is both inventive and meticulously designed.
