As a gamer with a keen eye for theater and a deep appreciation for exceptional talent, I can hardly contain my excitement about Betty Gilpin‘s Broadway debut in “Oh, Mary!” This woman has proven her comedic chops on shows like “Glow,” “Three Women,” and “Mrs. Davis,” and now she’s diving headfirst into the world of musical theater!
Betty Gilpin will take over the lead role in Oh, Mary! on Broadway this winter.
Starting January 21st and running until March 16th, Emmy-nominated actress Gilpin replaces Cole Escola in portraying Mary Todd Lincoln on stage. Additional tickets have been made available, prolonging the Broadway production until at least June 28, 2025.
School penned the play and has been the lead actor since it debuted off-Broadway in January 2024. Directed by Sam Pinkleton, this production reinterprets Mary Todd Lincoln as a sulky, aspiring cabaret artist yearning to escape her husband and the White House. Since its Broadway premiere in July 2024, the show has been consistently sold out and broke the box office record at the Lyceum Theatre ten times.
Beyond her character as Debbie Eagan/Liberty Belle in the series Glow, Gilpin has also shared screen time with Shailene Woodley in the Starz limited series Three Women and starred in Mrs. Davis on Peacock. Off-Broadway, she’s performed in Atlantic Theater Company’s 2015 production of I’m Gonna Pray For You So Hard, Signature Theatre’s 2012 production of Heartless, among others. However, her Broadway debut is yet to come.
For years, I’ve admired Cole immensely, but experiencing their mind-boggling complexity in “Oh, Mary! ” uncovered a level of twisted genius I didn’t realize was achievable. I feel incredibly fortunate to take over so that Cole can revisit their long-neglected interests: fracking and skincare. Working alongside the exceptional Sam Pinkleton as Mary will be one of the most thrilling moments in my life, and I won’t hesitate to share this with my two daughters.
School expressed, “I can’t help but feel incredibly thrilled to witness Betty Gilpin’s portrayal of Mary. She’s an exceptional comedic actress with a deep understanding of this character and the gravity required for playing a fool. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on seeing Betty as Mary.
Beyond Escola, the cast at present includes Conrad Ricamora portraying Mary’s spouse, James Scully as her teacher, Bianca Leigh as her supervisor, and Tony Macht in the role of Mary’s spouse’s aide.
