‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Stars Mourn Shannen Doherty

As a longtime fan of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Shannen Doherty at the age of 53 after her nine-year battle with cancer. Her role as Brenda Walsh in the iconic series brought her immense fame and turned her into a star. Although she had a rocky tenure on the show due to personal issues, her former co-stars have shared heartfelt tributes, emphasizing their decades-long friendship and respect for Doherty.

After the sad report that Shannen Doherty passed away on Saturday at the age of 53 following a nine-year fight with cancer, her “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-stars have been expressing heartfelt tributes to their deceased friend on social media.

In 1988, “Heathers” marked Doherty’s initial significant acting gig. Yet it was her part in “Beverly Hills, 90210,” starting in 1990, that catapulted her to stardom. She portrayed Brenda Walsh on Aaron Spelling’s teen series until 1994.

During her departure from the show, Doherty’s strained relationships with her castmates due to her divorce from Ashley Hamilton contributed. However, after her death, her ex-colleagues spoke about their longstanding friendship with her, offering insights into her interactions with them during her later years.

Jennie Garth spoke fondly of her late friend, sharing that she was among the most robust individuals she had encountered in life. Despite the manufactured rivalry between them by fans and the media during their time on the show, Garth emphasized the authenticity of their connection. “Our friendship was unyielding,” she stated. “We were frequently portrayed as adversaries, but this misrepresented the genuine essence of our relationship which was grounded in respect, admiration, courage, passion, determination, and love.”

Jason Priestley posted a picture of him and the late Shannen Doherty from their acting days on Instagram, expressing his shock and sadness over her passing. He described Shannen as a powerful and vibrant person who will be deeply missed. His thoughts go out to her family during this difficult time.

Brian Austin Green expressed his tribute to Doherty on Instagram with these heartfelt words: “Shan (Doherty), my beloved sister. You’ve been by my side through thick and thin. Your influence played a significant role in my comprehension of love. I’ll carry the deep sadness of your absence longer than I can currently fathom. Thank you for the priceless gift of your presence in my life.”

Tori Spelling posted a picture of herself and Doherty on her Instagram Story with the caption “Deep emotions inside me now…but we understood each other, and that’s what truly counts,” accompanied by several sad face emojis.

“You were so young and full of sorrow. Rest in peace, Shannen. I believe Luke is waiting for you with loving embraces.”

Simultaneously, Carol Potter, the actress who portrayed Shannon Doherty’s on-screen mother, expressed her shock and sadness over Shannon’s passing through an Instagram post. Her poignant message read, “I’m deeply saddened to hear about Shannon’s death. Her life was filled with ups and downs, but she remained strong and authentic throughout it all. She leaves us too soon, may she find peace.”

Following Luke Perry’s unexpected passing in 2019, the surviving principal cast members of “90210” came together once more – over thirty years since their popular ’90s program’s debut. They returned to portray their legendary characters for Fox’s revival series, titled “BH90210,” which aired that very summer. This six-episode long-running show, consisting of one season, was jointly created by Garth and Spelling, who also served as executive producers alongside Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, the co-creators and showrunners. The original “90210” actors were incorporated into the storyline in a unique show-within-a-show format.

Doherty initially declined the offer to act in the revival of “90210,” but following Perry’s demise, she reconsidered her decision. She explained previously, “I hadn’t intended to return, it wasn’t about the show itself, just my reluctance to go back there. However, after Luke’s passing, I was approached once more and felt deeply connected to our shared past on this show. Our characters, relationships, and the love we brought to life seemed to call me back.”

Joe E. Tata, who played the beloved Nat Bussichio, the owner of the Peach Pit diner on every season of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210” series, passed away in 2022.

In March 2015, Doherty was identified with breast cancer for the first time. Following treatment and multiple surgeries, she shared the news in April 2017 that she had achieved remission. However, in February 2020, on “Good Morning America,” she emotionally disclosed, “Unfortunately, I’m now battling stage 4 cancer as my condition has returned.” Later in June 2023, she sadly shared that the cancer had progressed to her brain.

I sadly announce that Shannen Doherty, a beloved actress, passed away on July 13 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including her cherished dog, Bowie, during her final moments. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend left us too soon, but her memory will live on in our hearts. Please respect the family’s privacy as they mourn this devastating loss.
