Beyoncé Becomes First Black Woman to Win Best Country Album Grammy With ‘Cowboy Carter’

It’s fair to assume that Beyoncé was truly surprised when she won the Best Country Album award at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

The trailblazing music artist, who became the first Black woman to win in the “Cowboy Carter” category, received her award from Taylor Swift, who had previously won the best country album award in 2010 for “Fearless”.

Following Swift’s announcement as the winner, the camera shifted to Beyoncé, who appeared taken aback by the result, a sentiment evident in her speech during the acceptance ceremony.

She exclaims with surprise after embracing Swift on stage, ‘I hadn’t anticipated this at all.’ She then expresses her gratitude towards God for enabling her to continue doing what she loves after such a long time, saying, ‘Oh my God!'”

Or more colloquially:

“She’s surprised after hugging Swift on stage, ‘I didn’t see this coming,’ and thanks the heavens for letting her keep doing what she loves all these years, exclaiming, ‘Oh my God!’

She goes on to express, “I’m grateful to the amazing country musicians who agreed to be a part of this project. We put in so much effort into it. I believe that genre can sometimes serve as a barrier to limit us artists, and I want to inspire people to pursue what they love and never give up. Thank you to my lovely family, the artists who collaborated with me… thank you! This album wouldn’t be what it is without your contributions. I want to express my gratitude once more to God, my family, and my fans. I’m still in awe of this recognition.

Cowboy Carter, released in March 2024, marked a significant milestone for the singer and served to shine a light on other Black artists within the realm of country music. A genre that Beyoncé had previously expressed feelings of exclusion from after encountering criticisms when she first attempted to join the scene years ago.

Swift and Beyoncé have had several significant instances together, ranging from the 2009 VMAs, where Beyoncé graciously allowed Swift to complete her acceptance speech after Kanye West’s interruption earlier, to both of them attending the premieres of each other’s concert movies.

Taylor Swift expressed her gratitude for never having to imagine what her life might have been without Beyoncé’s impact, stating this after Beyoncé attended the premiere of Swift’s Eras Tour movie. Beyoncé has shown countless artists, including herself, how to shatter conventions and challenge industry standards. Her kindness, strength, and adaptability have been a beacon for Swift throughout her career. The fact that Beyoncé was there tonight felt like a real-life fairy tale.
