President Joe Biden has signed a law allowing for the potential removal of TikTok from US markets within 9 months. Owned by Chinese company ByteDance, this app’s assets must be eliminated to enforce the ban. The administration emphasizes privacy and national security issues, expressing concerns over Chinese control of user data.
The Senate and House in the United States have passed a law aimed at mitigating risks from foreign-developed apps, such as TikTok. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, has announced the company’s intention to contest this bill in court, leveraging its constitutional freedoms, specifically the freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment.
Making the law stricter could significantly impact how TikTok functions within the US, affecting its 170 million American users and the employment of its 8,000 local staff. Additionally, the legislation grants the President increased power to deal with potentially dangerous apps owned by foreign entities.
