If the Recording Academy is listening, Bill Maher has some ideas for new Grammy categories.
As the 67th Grammy Awards approach in a few days, the comedian recently used an opportunity on HBO’s Real Time to propose some fresh and innovative award categories for the grand music event.
During the televised Grammys event, they usually showcase just a few major categories like album, record, and song of the year. However, many more awards are given out at an early-day ceremony, known as the premiere ceremony.
OR
On television, only a few main categories such as album, record, and song of the year are presented during the Grammys. But, numerous other awards are awarded earlier in the day at the premiere ceremony.
The host began by expressing their enthusiasm, stating that they’ve been crowned as ‘award rulers’ and it’s Grammys week. They’re confident that this will be an outstanding weekend.”
Or simply:
“The host started off excitedly, mentioning that they’re the ‘award champs’ during Grammy week, and promised a fantastic weekend ahead.
Following the disclosure of certain untelevised award categories, Maher contemplated suggesting fresh music categories of his own invention. To be frank, it’s unlikely that the Recording Academy will adopt any of his creative ideas. Stick around to find out why…
- Most regrettable facial tattoo.
- Best Christian gospel album by a singer obviously in the closet.
- Delta blues artist of the year, non-blind.
- Best song that [Donald] Trump got sued for playing at his rallies.
- Best rap song featuring a siren that makes you think there’s a cop behind you.
- Best song that celebrates “losing control” by a singer who was actually eventually institutionalized.
- Least awful a cappella album.
- Best new age artist whose voice makes your dog tilt his head in confusion.
- Best hip-hop track calling out the haters, even though the haters have a point.
- Best song with fucked up lyrics that people still sing along to.
Even though Maher’s categories might not be chosen, there will indeed be some genuine awards presented on Sunday. Among them is the Album of the Year award, which features nominees such as André 3000, Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Jacob Collier, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift in the top category.
On Sunday at 5 PM Pacific Time, the 2025 Grammy Awards will be broadcast live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with Trevor Noah returning as host for his fifth consecutive year. The initial ceremony will stream live on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel starting at 12:30 PM Pacific Time.
This week’s guests featured on Real Time were Peggy Noonan, Max Brooks and Dan Jones.
