As a long-time horror enthusiast who has seen my fair share of chilling performances, I am absolutely thrilled about Robert Eggers’ modern take on the classic “Nosferatu”. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Count Orlok seems to be a return to the darker, more terrifying roots of the vampire genre.
Slated for a Christmas day release, Robert Eggers’ reimagined version of the German classic, “Nosferatu,” aims to revitalize the vampire genre by returning these creatures to their dark origins. The film’s eerie atmosphere isn’t the only aspect that harks back to the roots of the undead; Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Count Orlok is a chilling testament to the fact that these creatures weren’t always sparkling. While we’ve only caught glimpses of Orlok in the trailer, his full reveal in the movie has us even more excited following Skarsgård’s initial reaction to the vampire’s appearance, which, according to Eggers, left Skarsgård utterly appalled.
In an interview with Deadline before the upcoming release of “Nosferatu,” Eggers shared that Skarsgård was taken aback when first shown Orlok’s appearance in the film. Eggers quoted, “Bill looks at the sculpture and is utterly shocked, exclaiming, ‘That’s nothing like me! This character didn’t even resemble me when he was alive. What on earth?'” This suggests that the movie will be even more terrifying for us since Skarsgård has previously portrayed renowned characters such as Pennywise from “IT” and Eric Draven from “The Crow.” So, one can only imagine how scared we’ll be!
In the beginning, I found it challenging to get accustomed to things, as I admit, I initially resembled a goblin with all the makeup and prosthetics being applied. Yet, once everything was set in place, I began to understand and appreciate the vision of our director more clearly.
He applied his makeup, muttering about resembling a goblin and finding it dreadful. However, once they styled his hair, even though the makeup wasn’t completely done, there was a moment where he seemed satisfied, saying ‘This is cool.’ I could then observe him in the mirror, experimenting with different looks.
Bill Skarsgård Says His ‘Nosferatu’ Prosthetics “Took Forever” to Apply
I’m glad Eggers opted for practical effects instead of relying solely on CGI for this project. However, Skarsgård confessed that the process was quite uncomfortable. Applying the prosthetics required as much as six hours, which is significantly longer than the 2.5 hours it took to apply his Pennywise makeup in “IT”. In an interview with Deadline, he said, “The prosthetics took forever,” making it clear that the application process was lengthy and time-consuming.
“Everything was very uncomfortable. You were very hot and you were very itchy and sticky.”
Without a doubt, we’re eagerly anticipating the results on Christmas Day, not just for the excitement of unveiling Orlok’s appearance, but also because Eggers’ movie is being acclaimed as one of the top horror films of the year by Fede Álvarez, director of “Alien: Romulus”. Such accolades make it seem like an ideal conclusion to a fantastic year for horror enthusiasts in 2024.
