Bill Skarsgård Played Pennywise But Said He’s Most ‘Terrified’ Of His Vampire Character In Nosferatu, And Now I Really Can’t Wait To See This Movie

As a fan who has been following Bill Skarsgård’s chilling performances, I can confidently say that his portrayal of Count Orlok in the upcoming Nosferatu remake is sending shivers down my spine. The way he describes his experience as “terrifying” and “deeply unsettling” only adds to the anticipation for this horror masterpiece.

As a huge fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about Bill Skarsgård’s chilling performances in various horror masterpieces. His unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise the Clown from It left me shivering with fear and captivated, and he’ll be reprising that role in an upcoming prequel series. Yet, his latest character – the notorious Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake – may have taken him to a new level of spine-tingling terror, as Skarsgård himself admitted he’s never been so “petrified” by a role. And as someone who’s already eagerly awaiting the horror movie, I can’t wait even more now!

In a conversation with Robert Eggers for AnOther Magazine, the actor from Crow star revealed that playing Count Orlok, a character famously portrayed in the 1922 silent film, was more unsettling than any role he has played so far. Given his chilling performance as Pennywise, which still gives many nightmares, this statement certainly generates anticipation for the upcoming movie. However, it’s intriguing to understand what makes this role so frightening for an actor who is already comfortable in the realm of the macabre. In his own words:

frankly speaking, there’s nothing quite as nerve-wracking as the role I recently took on, and I doubt I’ll find another one that’s this frightening. The entire experience was incredibly intense. As I delved into portraying someone other than myself, it felt like I was merely a conduit. Sometimes, roles don’t require this level of immersion, but when they do, it’s what you strive for. In those moments, the barriers seem to vanish, and the character flows through me effortlessly. For this role, my preparation was more extensive than anything I’ve ever tackled before. However, once we began filming, Orlok became a distinct presence, and I could tap into him and let him emerge. It was an exhilarating journey.

As a devoted fan, let me tell you, the statement from the star of “Devil All the Time” is certainly thought-provoking. To imagine facing a movie monster who’s even scarier than Pennywise the dancing clown gives me goosebumps. Yet, despite that initial chill, I can’t help but feel an excited anticipation, ready to be genuinely frightened!

Bill Skarsgård, well-known for immersing himself completely in his characters, found the rigor of portraying the iconic Vampire particularly demanding. He confessed that transforming into Orlok left him feeling profoundly uneasy due to the disconnect he experienced while acting, a sensation quite distinct from what he felt embodying Pennywise.

As a gamer, the closest role I’ve encountered that mirrors this experience is undoubtedly playing Pennywise or Bob Gray. It’s about bringing something so heavily reliant on makeup, yet so detached from my true self – an abstraction – to life. However, with Orlok, there was no room for any trace of myself. Bill simply doesn’t exist within it. And that’s truly terrifying. I found it challenging to fully immerse myself in the performance, it felt so alien and awkward.
