As a music enthusiast who has witnessed countless concerts, I must say that the Paris Olympics closing ceremony was nothing short of extraordinary! The eclectic blend of artists from Phoenix to H.E.R., Vampire Weekend, and Billie Eilish, all on one stage, was a testament to the power of music to unite people across borders.
On Sunday, the closing ceremony of the Olympics held in Paris was packed with unexpected moments and showcased music acts such as Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, H.E.R, and Phoenix performing.
American band Phoenix, originally hailing from France, commenced the performance with their 2009 hit “Lisztomania”. Athletes enthusiastically joined in, dancing and singing to this indie anthem. The concert included unexpected guest spots by French synthwave artist Kavinsky and Belgian singer Angèle, who teamed up for a rendition of “Nightcall”, a track famously used on the Drive soundtrack (previously, CSS singer Lovefoxxx had been part of the original version but was replaced by Angèle in this performance).
In the performance, rapper VannDa participated in “Funky Squaredance,” while French indie legends AIR played their hit “Playground Love” alongside Phoenix. An unexpected moment was when Ezra Koenig, lead vocalist of Vampire Weekend, took the stage to perform their collaborative piece “Tonight.” The show concluded on a charming note as frontman Thomas Mars leapt from the stage to interact with the Olympians in the audience.
Following the transfer of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, H.E.R. appeared to sing the national anthem. Tom Cruise added excitement with a thrilling entrance, leaping from the Stade de France onto the stage and greeting athletes while H.E.R. strummed a soulful guitar chord. Simone Biles, who claimed gold during her successful comeback to the games, then presented the U.S. Olympic flag to Cruise, which he placed on a motorcycle before riding off.
I recently lived through an exhilarating adventure captured by none other than Fulwell 73, the production house led by James Corden, famously behind shows like Hulu’s The Kardashians. They filmed me cruising on my bike through the romantic streets of Paris, jetting off to L.A. on a plane, and taking a thrilling leap from the sky straight towards the iconic Hollywood Sign – all set against the rhythmic beats of Red Hot Chili Peppers. This action-packed journey was previously hinted at by The Hollywood Reporter.
To celebrate the passing of the 2028 Olympics torch to Los Angeles, some of the city’s famous artists took the stage at Will Rogers Beach for a live performance. The Red Hot Chili Peppers played their 2002 hit “Can’t Stop,” while Billie Eilish performed “Birds of a Feather” from her latest album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” Snoop Dogg, who has been assisting NBC with prime-time coverage during the Games, made a triumphant return by playing two of his most popular songs, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Gin & Juice,” with a special appearance by Dr. Dre.
The event ended as French vocalist Yseult sang “My Way,” a song made famous by Frank Sinatra, but actually first sung by Claude François. Its English version was translated by Paul Anka.
