As a fan who has grown up listening to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s music, their journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Their latest Grammy nominations are a testament to their exceptional talent and hard work. Yet, it was heartening to hear Billie speak candidly about her life experience growing up with her brother, and how his passion for songwriting affected her own self-perception.
Following their second Oscar win earlier this year for the heart-wrenching “Barbie” tune, which left us in tears throughout 2021 (“What Was I Made For?”), songwriting duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell are gearing up for more accolades in the new year with numerous Grammy nominations. As the music industry’s most prestigious night approaches, one of the many upcoming award shows lined up on the 2025 TV schedule, Billie Eilish candidly discussed her childhood experiences growing up alongside her brother and how his talent influenced her own self-image.
In a nearly hour-long conversation with CBS Sunday Morning, Billie Eilish explained that she’s avoided labeling herself as a songwriter, even though her brother and she share the writing credits on most of her songs in her catalog. She elaborated on this during the interview.
Since I was raised alongside Finneas, his primary interest lies in songwriting, whereas mine has always been music, specifically performing and singing. Songwriting serves as a means for me to subsequently sing and perform the pieces I create. The individuals I am familiar with are true songwriters; it’s their profession. In contrast, I engage in songwriting primarily as a precursor to singing… It seems that songwriting is instrumental in Finneas’ survival.
Being a fan myself, I can relate somewhat to Billie Eilish’s perspective. Although her talent as a songwriter is universally admired (and rightfully so), she emphasized in an interview that she doesn’t solely identify with being a songwriter. In the context of her personal life, it seems she hasn’t fully embraced this label yet.
On this album, I wrote significantly more songs than any other project. Here’s what I mean: I’ve been composing music since I was 11 years old. However, my pace and quality of work were not as refined compared to my brother’s, which made me doubt my abilities as a songwriter. In fact, if I were an only child in a family without any musical background or musicians, it would be natural to label me as the songwriter, given my talent.
More On Billie Eilish
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but draw a striking parallel between Billie Eilish’s latest album and Drew Barrymore’s iconic scream scene. The raw emotion and intensity in both are simply captivating!
Billie Eilish has often been modest about her views on her own work, labeling one of her most popular songs like “bad guy” as the “dumbest song in existence.” However, her candid reflections on her journey as a songwriter, sharing the stage with her brother who is also a songwriter, offers insights into her experiences. Growing up, she’s always felt a sense of comparison with her brother, an experience many people can relate to. It’s quite subjective, isn’t it?
Regarding Billie Eilish’s latest album titled “Hit Me Hard And Soft,” the 22-year-old artist has shared that both she and her brother, Finneas, were facing writer’s block when filmmaker Greta Gerwig entered the picture and sparked their creative inspiration for the upcoming 2024 release. Unlike previous times when Eilish relied on Finneas to guide her through songwriting, this time it was a change of roles as she took a more prominent position in the entire writing process than ever before.
At the moment, Billie Eilish is traveling around the globe as part of her ongoing world tour, which will continue until the summer of this year. It remains to be seen if she and Finneas will bring home additional Grammy awards when the ceremony airs on February 2, 2025.
