As a gamer who has experienced my fair share of virtual losses and triumphs, I can relate to Billie Lourd‘s poignant words. Her journey mirrors a character progression in a game – facing adversity, learning resilience, and ultimately, growing stronger.
Nearly eight years following the passing of Carrie Fisher, Billie Lourd, her daughter, has become open about how her mourning has deepened her understanding and appreciation for life.
On the eighth anniversary of her mother’s passing, the actress posted an old childhood photo with her mom on Instagram, accompanied by a heartfelt message expressing the significance of that day for her.
She expressed that she never looks forward to this particular day, as it often brings anxiety about how poorly she’ll feel. Anticipation of her feelings usually proves accurate. However, this morning started off with a somber feeling hanging over her. Yet, when her children awoke, the gloom lifted, replaced by radiant sunshine.
She likened the anniversary of Fisher’s death to an “emotional downpour,” where there’s a lot of rain, yet the moments of sunlight in between are more radiant than any other day devoid of stormy skies. Additionally, she echoed a quote by Anne Lamott, stating that grief is similar to a broken leg that never entirely heals – it still aches when the weather turns cold, but one learns to dance with the limp.
As a gamer, let me tell you, today’s vibe is just like a challenging level in a game – tough, yet rewarding. The chilly sorrow in the air mirrors the frosty weather outside, and yes, I may be moving with a slight hobble, but I’m grooving my way through this game called life (apologies for the random Wicked reference there). Funny thing is, this limp of mine has turned me into a more graceful dancer. My grief, instead of being a burden, has opened my eyes to cherish every little moment that life offers. So today, I’m feeling a unique blend of sorrow and gratitude – call it ‘griefful’, if you will.
Lourd reflected: “I witness the enchantment that are my children, and I can sense she is an integral part of that wonder. All feelings surge within me – sorrow, happiness, yearning, awe, emptiness, and fulfillment. And remarkably, they all harmoniously exist together.

On December 27, 2016, Fisher passed away, four days after experiencing a heart attack during a flight from London to Los Angeles. In June 2017, it was determined by a coroner that her death was due to sleep apnea and several other contributing factors; however, they were unable to definitively identify the primary cause.
Additional factors leading up to her demise involved an accumulation of fatty deposits within the linings of her arteries, as reported in a previous press release. Furthermore, it was indicated that there seemed to be evidence suggesting she had consumed several drugs, though investigators could not definitively say if they played a role in her passing. In conclusion, her mode of death was classified as indeterminate.
Fisher’s mother, Debbie Reynolds, died one day after her daughter following a medical emergency.
