As a dedicated admirer of Billy Bob Thornton’s captivating on-screen presence, I find his career choices and philosophy to be nothing short of inspiring. His ability to turn down high-profile roles in favor of keeping his acting journey diverse and unpredictable is truly commendable.
The versatile and beloved Bad Santa star has played Karl Childers in Sling Blade, a high school football coach in Saturday Night Live, and a charmingly unhinged barber in The Man Who Wasn’t There, but Billy Bob Thornton refuses to play the bad guy in big-budget action and superhero movies. A wildcard in Hollywood, he’s delighted audiences with his goofy performances and recently, Thornton opened up about turning down two iconic “bad guy” roles in Spider-Man and Mission: Impossible III.
In an appearance on the Bingeworthy podcast, Thornton spoke about some significant roles he was given, including playing the Green Goblin in the initial Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire. Additionally, he was provided with the role of Owen Davian, a weapons dealer seeking a dangerous biological threat in Mission: Impossible III. He mentioned this during his conversation.
“I’m not particularly drawn towards such roles. Playing the Green Goblin meant waking up at 4am for hours of makeup application, which wasn’t appealing to me. Additionally, I didn’t want to be the character trying to take down Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III. When you play a villain in a major production like that, people tend to remember it long-term. Instead, I prefer roles that offer more flexibility and unpredictability.
In the end, it was Willem Dafoe who took on the roles of Green Goblin, while Philip Seymour Hoffman became Owen Davian. Both actors delivered exceptional performances, ultimately becoming vital elements within the series.
Billy Bob Thornton Is Off To Another Great Start With ‘Landman’
Billy Bob Thornton firmly believes that every role he takes on leaves a lasting impression in an actor’s career. To keep his career varied and surprising, he steers clear of being stereotyped as a villain. This approach has led him to tackle numerous intriguing roles throughout his career. At present, the 69-year-old actor is the star of Taylor Sheridan’s new series titled “Landman.” In this show, he portrays Tommy Norris, a skilled oil and gas landman who must navigate the complicated and dangerous landscape of energy acquisition. Although the series is still in its early stages, it promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Each appearance on-screen draws focus towards him, as if by command. At a glance, his worn features seem to carry the burden of countless experiences and the insight of someone who’s witnessed life in its entirety. In an interview with Deadline about his character in “Landman,” he commented:
As a cinephile immersed in the gritty realism of this industry, I can’t help but acknowledge the perilous nature of such a world. It’s a realm where risks are inherent and awareness is crucial. My character, initially relegated to less glamorous roles, has paid his dues by navigating its complexities. Now, he finds himself in a pivotal position – a mediator between the oil tycoon and the field workers. It’s a whirlwind existence with little time for contemplation. The job of a landman is one that keeps you on your toes, constantly solving problems as a fixer par excellence. An unrelenting hunger for success consumes him, driving him forward relentlessly. While he may not ponder the consequences much, I believe he carries a quiet acceptance of fate, a fatalistic outlook that fuels his determination.
Sheridan’s entire lineup of shows, including ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Mayor of Kingstown’, is renowned for its top-tier acting talent, and Taylor Sheridan’s addition of Timothy Olyphant in ‘Landman’ continues this trend. This acclaimed writer and director has a knack for attracting the finest actors in leading roles. Timothy Olyphant’s portrayal of Norris has garnered him his seventh Golden Globe nomination, and as the plot thickens, it’s reasonable to anticipate more captivating narratives and thought-provoking performances.
