90 years after their iconic on-screen romance unfolded, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan graced the stage at the 2025 Oscars, a nostalgic reunion that left audiences in awe. As presenters of the coveted Best Picture award, they couldn’t help but share some of their signature wit, reminding us all why we fell in love with them in “When Harry Met Sally.” The night belonged to the captivating film, Anora, as it took home the top honor.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Crystal and Ryan, who played Harry Burns and Sally Albright in the 1989 film “When Harry Met Sally,” directed by Rob Reiner, reunited at this year’s Oscars, which were held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Mar. 2. As they strolled onto the stage together (as shown in the video below), their reunion was accompanied by the classic big band score from the movie, hinting at more comedic moments to come between these two long-time co-stars.
Crystal, who has hosted the annual awards ceremony nine times, cheerfully stated, “It feels wonderful to return! After all, I used to be a part of this team,” she reminisced. Ryan inquired, “Ah, when did you start?” To which she humorously replied, “That would be nine formal suits back.” She then added, “Interestingly, my first time hosting was 35 years ago this month…it’s a bit surreal because, on my IMDb profile, I’m only 47.” The crowd erupted in laughter as Ryan commented, “Bill, that’s quite a few figures. Let’s get straight to the point.
Prior to unveiling the envelope and its contents, Crystal subtly referenced their “When Harry Met Sally” dynamic by rephrasing one of the film’s iconic lines. Without a moment’s pause, Crystal responded playfully to his comedy partner, saying, “You’re right, because when you have the opportunity to be an Oscar winner for the entirety of your life, you want that lifetime to start immediately.
Harry Keeps Meeting Sally for “Iconic” Moments
Harry is well-known for his affection towards Sally, as she feels cold when it’s 71 degrees outside and takes a long time to order a sandwich (not just any sandwich), but the love viewers have had for this film couple has remained strong over time. This was demonstrated once more recently when Crystal and Ryan collaborated on a Super Bowl advertisement, where they reenacted their characters from When Harry Met Sally by recreating the famous fake orgasm scene, creating another memorable moment.
In 1990, during the 62nd Academy Awards, the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally was nominated, but Nora Ephron didn’t win the award, which went to Tom Schulman for Dead Poets Society. However, she did triumph in the same category at the BAFTAs that year. Today, the script remains just as memorable and cherished by audiences whether they watch it on DVD or streaming platforms.
