The 2025 Tribeca Festival commenced by debuting the HBO documentary titled “Billy Joel: And So it Goes“, yet unfortunately, the film’s main figure was not able to participate in the festivities.
Last week, Joel shared the news of his recent diagnosis with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition, causing him to postpone his forthcoming performances. This development has understandably sparked worry among his devoted followers.
Regarding his commitment to recovery, it was noted that Joel wasn’t present at the Tribeca Festival opening night festivities. However, the team behind the two-part movie, similar to Howard Stern’s remarks yesterday, suggested there’s no cause for excessive worry about the “Piano Man” artist.
According to co-director Susan Lacy, everything will turn out well for him. He merely requires rest and rehabilitation, which he’s already undertaking. The doctors assured him on the previous day that he would make a full recovery.
Lacy and co-director Jessica Levin remarked, “He’s coming back,” conveying a joke about his health situation from the entertainer during their opening speech, demonstrating that his wit remains undimmed.
As a gamer putting my thoughts out there, I’d rather age gracefully than opt for cremation, even though the former comes with its own set of challenges.
On that particular day, Joel’s consistent lighting director and the executive producer of “And So it Goes,” Steve Cohen, mentioned they had a conversation with him.
Cohen shared with THR that his boss is doing wonderfully. He’s focusing on his healing process and recovery. He’s full of energy, joy, and excitement for us. He called to express how proud he is of the work we’ve done, and he was surprised by our progress. He’s a terrific person, as you know. Right now, he plans to spend time with his family to help him recover from this situation. His recovery prognosis is positive. Most importantly, he seems happy. In addition to being my boss and collaborator, he’s my dear friend. All I care about is his health and happiness. We’ve achieved so much together; he’s conquered the highest peaks and accomplished everything anyone could dream of.
Nevertheless, the film’s creators expressed a mix of joy and sadness as they unveiled the movie in his absence.
“We wanted him to be here and hoped he would be here, and he wanted to be here,” Lacy said.
Producer Emma Pildes commented, “This is tough, yet it’s a part of our biological process. However, this is a tribute to him and his artistic talent, everything he achieved. We deeply wish he could have joined us in celebrating.
Although Joel wasn’t able to attend the premiere at New York’s Beacon Theatre, celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Mariska Hargitay, Mira Sorvino, and Tom Hanks graced the event. Notably, Hanks co-produces the film “And So it Goes” with his partner Gary Goetzman through their production company, Playtone.
On the opening night, Robert De Niro, one of the co-founders of Tribeca, along with Jane Rosenthal, were present. During their opening speech, they delightfully recited lines from some of Joel’s popular songs such as “Movin’ Out,” “Only the Good Die Young,” “New York State of Mind” and “You May Be Right.
Upon hearing about Joel’s brain condition, De Niro and Rosenthal expressed their “heartfelt affection” and “wholehearted backing” towards the musician, hoping for his “speedy and complete recuperation.
Our thoughts are with Billy Joel and his family after the recent news. As a musical icon from New York who’s renowned globally, he has significantly impacted the cultural tapestry of this city and moved audiences worldwide. We send our affection and unwavering support, hoping for his swift recovery and renewed strength.
It’s an immense privilege that this year’s opening event honors his exceptional legacy and persistent impact on New York’s cultural scenery. This occasion seems particularly fitting to acknowledge a creative powerhouse whose art mirrors the essence of our city – and the spirit of Tribeca.
Although just the initial segment of the two-piece series titled “And So it Goes” aired on Wednesday evening, both segments are scheduled to debut on HBO and Max during the summer season.
