One of Adam Sandler’s less recognized and controversial comedies is making a comeback on streaming platforms this February. From 1995 to 2008, Sandler’s comedy career was nothing short of iconic. During this period, the actor and writer produced hits like “Happy Gilmore,” “The Wedding Singer,” “The Waterboy,” “Punch-Drunk-Love” (although not a comedy, it’s still worth mentioning), “50 First Dates,” “The Longest Yard,” and “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (this writer’s personal favorite). However, the film that started it all was “Billy Madison.” And now, it’s returning to streaming.
On February 1st, the comedy movie “Billy Madison” becomes available on Hulu. This film was directed by Tamra Davis and co-written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy (known for “Happy Gilmore”). Notably, it is one of Sandler’s often overlooked comedies. Released in 1995, the movie chronicles the story of 27-year-old Billy Madison (played by Sandler), who stands to inherit his father’s hotel empire. However, there’s a catch: before he can claim the fortune, he must revisit his educational journey. But this isn’t just about college; instead, Billy is tasked with repeating grades one through twelve. In summary, the movie’s synopsis goes as follows: Billy Madison must successfully complete each grade to prove his worthiness of inheriting his father’s empire.
To take control of his tired father Brian’s hotel empire, unmotivated and sluggish Billy Madison is forced to redo every grade from first through twelfth. As Billy advances, his loathed rival Eric Gordon makes increasingly tough efforts to thwart him.
The movie “Billy Madison” didn’t get positive reviews from critics when it first came out; it currently has a low score of 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics often accused it of being a direct copy of the “Dumb and Dumber” formula, focusing on the absurd antics of an extremely dim-witted protagonist. However, fans seemed to enjoy it more, giving it a much higher audience rating of 79%, as they could appreciate its attempt at over-the-top, slapstick humor. On Letterboxd, the film has also done well, earning a respectable 3-star average rating from users.
Adam Sandler is Reprising One of His Best Roles in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’
One year following the premiere of “Billy Madison,” Adam Sandler delivered what many consider his finest comedy work: the golf-themed “Happy Gilmore.” Nearly three decades have passed, and this July, Sandler will be back on the green for a second outing with “Happy Gilmore 2,” as announced by Sandler himself. However, Netflix has yet to reveal an exact release date for this sequel.
There’s plenty to look forward to in the upcoming film, Happy Gilmore 2. Notably, Christopher McDonald will be back as Gilmore’s longtime rival, Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen is set to reappear as Gilmore’s wife, Virginia Venit. However, what’s truly exciting is the return of Ben Stiller as the strict care home worker, Hal L.
In addition to the original actors, “Happy Gilmore 2” will feature Margaret Qualley, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, Bad Bunny, and a surprise appearance from Eminem. The initial teaser for “Happy Gilmore 2” was unveiled to mark the new year. Although it’s not a complete trailer, it does offer fans their first official sneak peek of Gilmore using his signature golf swing once again.
