Binding of Isaac Creator Confirms a Sequel, Just Not Yet

According to its creator Edmund McMillen, a fresh chapter in the popular game series The Binding of Isaac is expected at some point. Since its debut in 2011, The Binding of Isaac has been recognized as one of the most impactful roguelikes ever made. The 2014 remake, titled The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, featured a new engine that facilitated additional content like Afterbirth and Repentance.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve seen the incredible impact Rebirth has left on the genre, igniting curiosity among fans about what Edmund McMillen might cook up next. Recently, in a TikTok post, McMillen didn’t shy away from addressing the potential of another installment. “I can confidently tell you that there will be another Isaac game at some point,” he revealed.

He gave us a tantalizing hint, but he quickly dashed any grand hopes, stating that there were currently no immediate plans for it. He mentioned that a worthy sequel would need considerable time and effort—probably around four to five years—to meet the high standards set by Rebirth’s players. In other words, don’t hold your breath for it anytime soon.

He indicated that no work on a sequel is currently underway, thereby quelling rumors suggesting an early production phase for the follow-up. Instead, he suggested that a spin-off or another game inspired by Isaac could be coming before we see a true sequel. From a development perspective, it’s understandable why McMillen might not be ready to jump into The Binding of Isaac 2 quite yet.

Over time, the concept of rebirth has been refined and broadened, ensuring it doesn’t feel old-fashioned. Developing a genuine sequel isn’t just about adding fresh content; it necessitates a compelling reason for its existence, guiding the game into uncharted territories. This process requires careful consideration to get right, which is why McMillen is currently engrossed in Mewgenics, his upcoming roguelike endeavor, that he claims is some of his finest work yet.

He intends to unveil Mewgenics by year’s end, following which he’ll take some time off before focusing on additional content (DLC) for the game. Only after Mewgenics and its associated updates have been well-received will he begin contemplating The Binding of Isaac‘s future. He also hinted that Mewgenics could temporarily satisfy fans of The Binding of Isaac.

Although a future sequel is still possible at some point, it’s clear that McMillen isn’t in a hurry to make one right away. For the time being, Rebirth stands as one of the best-crafted and content-packed roguelikes available, while McMillen’s work on Mewgenics might provide an innovative spin for fans seeking fresh gaming experiences.

Although The Binding of Isaac 2 isn’t likely to be released soon, McMillen has emphasized that whenever it does come out, he intends for it to be well worth the patience.
