Black Myth: Wukong is already breaking records despite controversy

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say, the gaming landscape is ever-evolving and Black Myth: Wukong certainly has stirred quite a storm. On one hand, there are whispers of controversy that have tainted its reputation, but on the other, its gameplay and the sheer number of players flocking to it are simply breathtaking.

In the gaming world, there’s nothing like a bit of controversy, and the launch of Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong is no exception to this rule. Our review of Black Myth: Wukong couldn’t help but bring up concerns about allegations of sexism within the team, while other critics have suggested that such issues might tarnish the game’s appeal.

Still, it’s issues with pacing, glitches, and feeling like a boss rush that potentially stops Black Myth: Wukong from being the next Elden Ring. We reiterated that Wukong isn’t a straight-up Soulslike, but it seems that its inevitable comparisons to FromSoftware’s 2022 behemoth are enough to get you interested.

Black Myth: Wukong is already breaking records

Presently, Black Myth: Wukong outranks other games on Steam in terms of popularity, surpassing the record-breaking player counts of Elden Ring, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077.

Black Myth: Wukong, the new game, has been released and is currently trending as the most popular game on Steam, surpassing even Elden Ring in the number of players at the same time. Despite any off-screen controversies, it seems gamers are eager to play it. (Based on The Verge’s Tom Warren’s report)

One critic remarked, “It’s surprising to see such high numbers with little marketing on just one platform, isn’t it?” However, it’s important to note that Game Science is a Chinese developer, and there are approximately 1.4 billion people residing in China. While the game may not be well-known in the West, it has been generating quite a buzz elsewhere.

Currently, as I speak, Black Myth: Wukong has a player count of 2,223,179, surpassing Counter-Strike’s 1,267,373. Following this, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Dota 2 hold the third and fourth spots with approximately 614,267 and 583,184 players respectively. Interestingly, a game called Banana is in fifth place with 413,443 players enjoying it.

Black Myth: Wukong has made an unexpectedly impressive debut. In a short time, it managed to attract over 2.2 million players simultaneously, coming close to Counter-Strike’s record of 1,818,773. Now, it even surpasses Palworld (2,101,867 players), with only PUBG (3,257,248 players) having more concurrent users at its peak.

As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the unprecedented popularity of Black Myth: Wukong, breaking records as the most-played single-player game ever on Steam. But let’s not forget about Palworld, which created quite a stir with its successful launch, only to seemingly fade from view.

Recently, Steam recorded a remarkable bandwidth spike of 70 Terabytes per second shortly after the pre-download for the game Black Myth: Wukong commenced. Moreover, during one month of pre-sales, approximately 1.2 million copies were sold, generating around $52 million. This phenomenal success in the Chinese market has been breaking records for the gaming industry. Currently, it seems that Black Myth: Wukong is the most popular game on offer.
