Black Myth: Wukong : Release date, trailers, gameplay & platforms

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless hours of hack-and-slash action RPGs, the anticipation for Black Myth: Wukong is like a phoenix soaring towards its destiny! With my gaming history drenched in the lore of games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, the prospect of exploring Chinese mythology through this Soulslike gem is nothing short of exhilarating.

“Black Myth: Wukong is currently one of the most eagerly awaited action RPGs, modeled after the 16th-century novel Journey to the West. Players will have the opportunity to guide the main character, Wukong, through a world steeped in Chinese mythology and filled with lush landscapes.”

In keeping with typical Soulslike games, the focus lies heavily on tough, engaging battles and colossal boss encounters. Additionally, you’ll find yourself immersed in exploring the game world and piecing together its intricate lore.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, check out everything you need to know about the upcoming game.

What is the release date?

Upcoming game “Black Myth: Wukong” is scheduled for release on August 20th, and with the launch date rapidly approaching, it seems delays are unlikely. Therefore, if possible, consider taking some time off work to enjoy the game’s release.

What do we know about gameplay?

Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game, reminiscent of the Soulslike subgenre that gained prominence through games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring. However, it leans more towards the structure of the original, offering a more linear and concentrated environment to traverse, as opposed to a fully open world.

In this game, you’ll find all the traditional elements of its genre, but with a strong emphasis on demanding gameplay. You can also look forward to encountering unusual and terrifying enemies, as well as epic boss fights that mark the end of each game section. However, unlike Soulslike games, it won’t feature the same leveling system.

In combat, you have multiple positions (or stances) to choose from, each providing distinct attack and movement strategies. The focus mechanism plays a crucial role; it accumulates through light attacks and dodging, and can be used to perform powerful strikes.

In this game, you’ll encounter spells, which follow a conventional mana system you might already know. Additionally, there’s a flexible skill tree that lets you customize Wukong to your preferred style as you progress through the game.

Are there any trailers?

So far, a significant number of previews for Black Myth: Wukong have been released, featuring gameplay, cinematics, in-depth analyses, and much more. Here are some of the most noteworthy ones.

Additionally, you’ll notice an earlier gameplay unveiling from 2020, which can be found just above the recently released gameplay trailer in that same section.

In the ensuing years, we received a six-minute gameplay trailer, which was a direct excerpt from the actual game. This gave us an idea of the quality of the voice acting within the game, along with its musical score too.

In the latest trailer, we got a glimpse of some new game settings, along with additional pieces from the familiar soundtrack playing.

As the launch nears, we received a release date trailer towards the end of 2023, which was followed by a preorder trailer after several months. The initial one provided us with a closer look at in-game scenes and gameplay, while the latter was a full CGI trailer that also unveiled the collector’s edition details.

What platforms is it on?

It’s confirmed to be released on the following platforms:

  • PS5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC

As a devoted enthusiast, I must share some news about the Xbox adaptation of Black Myth: Wukong that might have us all waiting just a bit longer. At Summer Gamest Fest 2024, it was announced that there would be a slight delay in its release. Unfortunately, the new date has yet to be disclosed. Rest assured, I’ll keep you posted as soon as more information becomes available and we can update this guide together!
