Black Myth: Wukong’s Xbox release in doubt following massive launch

As an ardent gamer with years of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and frustration as I find myself once again on the sidelines, watching from afar as the Xbox community is left out in the cold regarding the release of Black Myth: Wukong.

Currently, Game Science’s title Black Myth: Wukong can be found virtually everywhere, save for a few exceptions. Following its release on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20, the game has swiftly climbed the charts on Steam and reportedly sparked an upsurge in PS5 sales in China. Regrettably, not all gamers have the opportunity to enjoy this exciting new release.

You might’ve noticed that Black Myth: Wukong is missing out on a pretty major platform, with Xbox players being locked out in the cold. Microsoft has typically struggled to find its footing in China, and while the Xbox could make a big splash with major releases like Wukong, there are swirling rumours it might not happen.

According to Paul Tassi of Forbes, Black Myth: Wukong appears to be facing challenges in securing an Xbox release, primarily because of optimization problems. You may recall that Larian Studios delayed Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox due to the requirement that games must run smoothly on both the entry-level Xbox Series S and the more powerful Series X.

1. In contrast to Baldur’s Gate 3, which initially didn’t support split-screen co-op on the Xbox Series S, thereby causing a delay of four months compared to PC users and three months compared to PlayStation gamers, Black Myth: Wukong appears to be encountering another issue due to an unspecified technical problem. It remains uncertain if this predicament is related specifically to the Xbox Series S.

Concerningly, a Microsoft representative echoed the same generic response that Tassi had received months ago when he requested comment. The statement reads: “We’re eager for the release of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are collaborating with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms.” However, this statement does not provide any new information.

“Our partnership agreements prevent us from discussing deals with other platform providers, but our primary goal is to make Xbox an exceptional gaming platform. The cornerstone of this effort is providing excellent games, and we’re committed to doing just that.” Conveniently, Forbes has dispelled the speculation surrounding a year-long PlayStation exclusivity deal.

Still, the fact that PC dominates in China leads Tassi to suggest that getting Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox could be a low-priority release. As there’s not even a rough release window, Xbox players are left scrambling for news and waiting for confirmation that they’ll (eventually) be able to play one of 2024’s biggest games.
