As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say I wholeheartedly appreciate Activision’s decision to keep Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on last-gen consoles. While I’ve been fortunate enough to upgrade my hardware over the years, I remember the days when I was still playing on my trusty old Xbox One.
Modern video games are increasingly focusing on compatibility with the latest generations, specifically the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, by abandoning older generation releases in favor of optimization.
Despite forgoing support for previous generations in the shooter genre, VALORANT console has chosen to focus instead on its impressive graphics and mechanics, thriving best on high-performance hardware. On the other hand, Call of Duty has remained committed to the older generation leading up to Black Ops 6, earning praise from the community for this decision.
Call of Duty fans praise Black Ops 6’s old-gen loyalty
Many fans within the Call of Duty community expressed disapproval when Black Ops 6 came out for Xbox One and PS4, but the excitement surrounding it as the latest game from Treyarch was high due to its potential with numerous new elements.
As Black Ops 6 gets closer, I find myself joining the chorus of appreciation for the decision to keep the price reasonable. It’s a smart move to avoid alienating players from the latest installment in our annual series. Despite the stock issues with next-gen consoles being mostly sorted out, there’s still a significant portion of us gamers holding onto our trusty PS4 and Xbox One controllers.
Taking to Reddit, one fan claimed, “The games run at 60 fps on last gen. Half of the player base is still on last gen. It’d be stupid of them not to make last gen versions.”
How do y’all feel about BO6 being on Xbox one and PS4?

“This engine is quite adaptable; the main variations between the present and previous generation lie in resolution and load times. Other than that, they’re quite similar, particularly when comparing consoles launched in 2013.” The second fan also commented.
Some have raised doubts about continuing to support consoles that are over a decade old and have pondered whether Call of Duty could be significantly improved if it only targeted current-generation systems. With Xbox’s Game Pass launch, there would be a greater chance for players across various income brackets to enjoy this year’s CoD from the get-go.
A third fan agreed, saying that while it’s desirable to focus on the current generation, there are simply too many players still using previous generations that they can’t be ignored.
The beta for Black Ops 6 is drawing near, as the Call of Duty Next event is scheduled for late August. It’s clear that gamers are eagerly anticipating trying out whatever tantalizing treat Treyarch has been preparing.
