Filmmaker Ryan Coogler is currently experiencing a surge in success with his recent supernatural horror production titled “Sinners“, which could potentially impact the continuation of his Black Panther films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a recent interview, Coogler expressed his perspectives on where his filmmaking journey might lead next.
In conversation with Coogler, he mentioned that Sinners stands out from his previous projects spanning the past decade. When inquired if he wishes to return to franchise films such as Black Panther, Coogler’s reaction was nuanced. He expressed, “It’s just that not everyone can create this kind of work, so I feel a sense of responsibility too. Of course, I aspire to make more films like Sinners, but the filmmakers I admire greatly are the ones who produce such pieces,” he added.
He stated that they create unique films on a grand scale, and he believes each production moves the medium forward. He also said, “If the audience enjoys the movie and finds a spot for me among those successful films.” Although Coogler is renowned for “Black Panther” and its sequel, “Sinners” is fast becoming another prized piece in his film collection; it has garnered significant attention since its release earlier this month.
In the movie titled “Sinners,” twin brothers, portrayed by the same actors, seek a new beginning in their hometown of Mississippi Delta. However, they stumble upon an ominous supernatural presence that has been lying in wait for them. Alongside them, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, and Jack O’Connell take on other significant roles. Notably, this project is the first entirely original work by Ryan Coogler; his previous projects like “Black Panther” and “Creed” were spin-offs from pre-existing franchises.
What Do Coogler’s Comments Mean for the Future of Black Panther?
Ryan Coogler has voiced his intentions to create more self-generated movies down the line; however, it appears that he may not completely step away from the Black Panther series. There have been talks about his potential involvement in a future installment of the franchise, suggesting that he has numerous concepts for where the third movie might be headed. At this moment, there’s no specific information or release date available regarding Black Panther 3.
Working on Black Panther 3 might make the movie even more captivating, as Coogler discussed his apprehensions about filmmaking and how he overcame them for his latest project. When working with established franchises, there’s a certain level of protection that comes in; it reduces some of the pressure. The downside is, you can hide behind this protection. However, I wanted to challenge myself by not relying on this comfort zone. Instead, I decided to take risks with this project.
Sinners is now showing in theaters.
