As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for superhero films and a soft spot for the 90s, I must say that Beau DeMayo’s idea for a Wesley Snipes-led Blade 4, inspired by an Old Man Logan-esque narrative, sounds absolutely enthralling. The blend of action, darkness, and a touch of the supernatural is reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa’s masterpieces, which I believe would make for a visually stunning and emotionally gripping film.
Beau DeMayo, who ran Season 1 of X-Men ’97, has proposed a film similar to Logan for Wesley Snipes’ character Blade. Although Marvel Studios is busy rebooting Blade with Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker in the MCU, fans are excited about the potential return of original actor Wesley Snipes following his appearances in Deadpool and Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool, has expressed interest in having Snipes reprise his role as Blade one last time for a farewell film, providing the character with an Old Man Logan-like conclusion, since his franchise ended prematurely after 2004’s Blade Trinity.
One individual in agreement with Reynolds is Beau DeMayo, creator of X-Men ’97. He expressed his vision for a Wesley Snipes-starred Blade 4 on Twitter. In this pitch, a vampire apocalypse unfolds where a human resistance, featuring the character Brother Voodoo, brings back Blade with the mission to eliminate all vampires. DeMayo suggested that the work of legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa would be evident in such a movie.
DeMayo’s History with Blade
What is interesting about DeMayo’s pitch is that he was, at one point, attached to write the MCU Blade reboot for Marvel Studios. DeMayo is now best known as the creator and head writer of X-Men ’97 Season 1. The series received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, with many calling it one of the best Marvel projects ever made. This is why fans are still wondering what happened between DeMayo and Marvel Studios that led to him being fired from X-Men ’97 just a day before the series world premiere and two weeks before it aired on Disney+. DeMayo wrote the scripts for X-Men ’97 Season 2 but is not overseeing its development or the recently announced Season 3.
Intriguingly, DeMayo’s vision for a modern Blade sequel, titled Blade 4, shares striking resemblances with the initial pitch for Blade: Trinity. Much like David S. Goyer, DeMayo originally envisioned Blade 4 set in a world dominated by vampires, echoing the novel I Am Legend’s post-apocalyptic scenario. The narrative would have depicted an aged but resilient Blade navigating a vampire-ruled world, following a catastrophic event where they unleashed a virus that drastically reduced the sun’s hours of appearance.
Currently, there are no plans for another Wesley Snipes-starring Blade movie, with the main focus being on rebooting the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, there’s a chance that Snipes might reprise his role as Blade in Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it’s also possible that the farewell for characters like Snipes’ Blade could be in Deadpool & Wolverine, marking the end of the Fox Universe.
