As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment, much like Edgar Wright’s take on Ant-Man, when I think about the MCU’s Blade reboot. The film, initially brimming with promise, seems to have vanished into thin air, owing to an endless string of delays that eventually led Marvel Studios to postpone its release indefinitely. Delroy Lindo, who was once set to star in this project, alongside Mahershala Ali as the iconic Daywalker, has recently shared his thoughts on the early concept of the movie – a vision that was electrifying before it seemingly derailed, according to their words.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly to hype up the upcoming horror movie Sinners, Delroy Lindo reminisced about his short stint on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Blade reboot. “It appeared that Marvel was genuinely keen on my thoughts,” the actor shared. The return of Blade, featuring Mahershala Ali, was initially unveiled by Kevin Feige in 2019. Some of the hold-ups were due to external influences such as the COVID pandemic and combined SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. However, the production has faced its own internal issues as well.
From a passionate moviegoer speaking here, Delroy Lindo didn’t delve too much into the behind-the-scenes missteps. But, he did tantalize us with tales of how thrilling the initial stages of the project were, hinting at what could have been if things had gone differently. In my chats with the producers, screenwriter, and director (at that time), it was clear that the project was shaping up to be incredibly inclusive.
Initially, it was thrilling on a theoretical level, and I was equally enthusiastic about the character development. However, something happened that caused it to veer off course.
