Blake Lively Says Ryan Reynolds Discussed Deadpool in 2010 Before They Married

As a huge fan of both Blake Lively and the Deadpool universe, I can’t help but be in awe of the serendipitous way that events unfolded for the actress to eventually take on the role of Lady Deadpool in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” With her husband Ryan Reynolds sharing early details about the project and her uncanny resemblance to the character, it seems like fate was at play.

Taylor Swift could have shined as Lady Deadpool, but it’s challenging to picture the singer-songwriter wearing those red tights with the same impact as Blake Lively did in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The actress, who gained fame for her role as Serena on “Gossip Girl,” was a strong fit for portraying Deadpool’s astonishing alter ego. Her connection went beyond being married to Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, making her an ideal candidate for the part.

Recently on social media, Lively shared an amusing account of how she came to land the role (Instagram post). In 2010, I was acting on “Gossip Girl” and preparing for my debut in “Green Lantern,” co-starring with the affable Canadian actor Reynolds. During this time, Reynolds, our other costar Waititi, and we were all introduced to the upcoming film “Deadpool.” Little did we know, it was a unique superhero project that would later become a phenomenon.

1. “Many of us were unfamiliar with the concept of ‘meta’ at that time. However, Taika stood out because he’s always been more intellectually advanced than most of us. Although we grasped it in principle, the idea of how it would coalesce for an audience was unclear to all except him. It wasn’t a realistic dream; the movie seemed unlikely to materialize.”

In her exuberant social media update, revealed as the real Lady Deadpool in the film’s end credits, Lively went on describing the unexpected chain of events. Notably, artist Rob Liefeld brought Lady Deadpool to life in 2010, inspired by Lively, who was famously known for her role in “Gossip Girl” at that time.

10 years ago in 2010, Rob Liefeld sketched Lady Deadpool without a mask for the first time. Fast forward to his recent post, I discovered it. A year after that revelation, the third installment of @deadpoolmovie was filmed and is now playing in cinemas. Back then, Rob wasn’t aware that he was collaborating with Ryan Reynolds on the project.

1) “The universe can be quite whimsical at times, and Shawn Levy is the perfect embodiment of that. He’s one of a kind, both in front of and behind the camera. There will never be another like him. His remarkable body of work truly speaks volumes. Thank you for allowing me to join you on this incredible journey, in every step along the way. What an adventure we’re all sharing… Catch @deadpoolmovie in theaters now! Lots of love – LP” 💋

Once the confusion had subsided and the actual figures were known, Deadpool and Wolverine’s opening weekend at the top of the box office in the US earned a total of $211 million. Furthermore, Deadpool’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought in an impressive $233.1 million from international markets.

As a huge fan of both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, I can’t help but be thrilled about their buddy film’s impressive earnings of $444.6 million worldwide. This success story reached every nook and cranny, proving that even an R-rating couldn’t keep audiences from embracing the unique chemistry between Deadpool and Wolverine.

Disney might not agree with this perspective, but in my opinion, Deadpool and Wolverine were among the initial R-rated films suitable for all audiences. While these movies carry an R rating, our intention was to create a film that would resonate with a wide range of viewers, including comic book enthusiasts and those who are not.

“One of the most engaging elements about working on ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is the introduction of intriguing new characters, such as Lady Deadpool played by Blake Lively and Cowboy Deadpool portrayed by Matthew McConaughey. There are too many others to name or reveal at this time.”
