The upcoming 2024 film titled “Blink Twice” was initially named “Pussy Island.” After watching the movie, I can see why that title fits perfectly. It seems fitting for Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut and her co-writing with E.T. Feigenbaum, given its provocative, over-the-top, and playful nature, as well as being described as a thrilling and twisty tale in the “Blink Twice” review. Moreover, it suggests the mysterious secret lurking beneath the film’s picturesque facade.

The recently released film, currently showing in cinemas, features Naomi Ackie as young server Frida. She’s invited to visit tech billionaire Slater King’s (played by Channing Tatum, who is Shawkat’s real-life partner) private island with others. At first, she and her roommate, Jess (Alia Shawkat), are thrilled about this chance. However, they start to suspect something amiss when disturbing truths come to light. What kind of trouble is brewing there, and what does it symbolize? Let’s delve deeper into the thought-provoking conclusion of “Blink Twice” and discover more.

What Happens At The End Of Blink Twice

As Frida starts to question her exceptional memory, she becomes concerned when she finds that Jess is missing. However, Sarah (Adria Arjona delivering an outstanding performance), Camilla (Liz Caribel), and Heather (Trew Mullen) can’t seem to remember her being on the island. After Frida uncovers her friend’s room has been transformed into a storage space in just one night, Sarah shares with her that she too suspects something is off, as signs of Jess surface in the form of a lighter bearing her name.

Frida discovers her memory has been triggered when she accidentally ingests a harmless venom from one of Slater’s crew’s hunting snakes, which had bitten Jess the previous night. This venom seems to counteract the memory-suppressing substance in the unique perfume, Desiride, that only exists on the island. With this revelation, Frida and Sarah mix the venom into tequila shots to awaken Camilla and Heather. However, their attempt to retrieve the women’s phones fails, though they do find a box of Polaroid photos documenting past outings with various male guests. As her memories come flooding back, Frida becomes aware that these men have been exploiting and abusing the women, with the knowledge that the abuse will be forgotten by morning due to the island’s mysterious perfume.

As dusk approaches, Heather and Camilla’s recollections suddenly surface, prompting them to react aggressively towards the men. In the ensuing chaos marked by bloodshed, Frida rediscovers that this isn’t her first time on the island upon another look at the Polaroids. Shortly after, with several island visitors either dead or severely injured and Frida bound, Slater confesses his insincere apologies for his past harmful actions and suggests he too was abused by his father. Coincidentally, Frida manages to free herself without Slater’s knowledge, and while he steps away, she secretly injects Desiride into his vape pen, causing him temporary memory loss about the tragic events.

In a turn of events, Slater faints after accidentally slipping and striking his head on a table, causing nearby candles to ignite a fire. Fortunately, Frida and Sarah manage to evacuate the premises safely and extinguish the blaze, rescuing Slater in the process.

The Philosophical Question The Perfume Leads Blink Twice’s Characters To Explore

In an interview with Collider, Zoë Kravitz explains that the storyline for “Blink Twice” stemmed from her ambition to delve into the theme of power, particularly empowerment. Essentially, this is what Frida achieves over Slater, mirroring how he had previously asserted his dominance over her and other women on the island. Though some might see this as a touch of hypocrisy, I personally find it a highly satisfying ending to one of the most compelling films directed by a woman that I’ve recently watched.

In his post-violent confrontation address to Frida, Slater subtly alludes to the mistreatment he and his sister endured at their father’s hands before admitting that he finds solace in burying this past. Consequently, he justifies inflicting similar pain on women because he claims to provide them an “offering” of erasing any recollection of his reprehensible actions through Desiride drug use. However, the use of magic roofies does not absolve him or his companions from their heinous actions, making Slater, being a victim himself, a self-proclaimed hypocrite.

From my perspective, it’s clear that Frida isn’t exploiting Slater for sexual gain, as some might speculate. Her disillusionment with feelings of powerlessness and the struggle to find self-worth long preceded her encounter with the tech billionaire at the gala. She confided in Jess about these struggles after her snake bite on the island, expressing a desire to reclaim her power from her abuser. In this sense, both Frida and Slater have received what they each deserved – power for our hero and a taste of his own medicine for our villain.

What The Blink Twice Island Represents, According To Zoë Kravitz

Beyond its resemblance to another private island linked to a controversial financier, the backdrop of “Blink Twice” carries far more profound allegorical implications than what initially meets the eye. Kravitz delved into these underlying symbolic layers in her interview with Collider.

For example, she explains that the island’s design was heavily influenced by the Biblical story of the Garden of Eden, where Eve, the first woman, is accused of the initial transgression for listening to the Devil (in the form of a snake) and consuming a prohibited fruit that would give her understanding between right and wrong. Kravitz finds it somewhat strange that a woman seeking knowledge was labeled as sinful.

In this scenario, she chose to use snakes as the redeeming element in the movie “Blink Twice“, by giving their venom the ability to reveal the wickedness around Frida. This creative symbolism emphasizes the film’s exceptional quality, making it one of the top movies of the year and, more importantly, a potent feminist allegory.

It appears that “Blink Twice” is a movie that’s certainly worth watching again due to its unexpected plot twists, symbolism, and intricate turns. Although it might eventually become available on Amazon Prime, given that it’s produced by Amazon MGM Studios, I strongly recommend catching it in theaters (maybe even twice) during its August release. If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to head to the cinema before this delightful thriller vanishes as quickly as a blink!
