As a devoted fan who has followed “Blue Bloods” for over a decade, I must say that the season 14 finale left me both satisfied and frustrated in equal measures. On one hand, it was heartening to see Danny Reagan finally asking Maria Baez out on a date after years of speculation and fan theories. On the other hand, the suddenness of their potential relationship development felt a bit rushed, especially considering the time constraints of the series finale.

After much anticipation spanning many years, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) has at last extended a date invitation to Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez). This brief moment unfolded towards the conclusion of the “Blue Bloods” series finale, titled “End of Tour.” Though it’s only a short scene, it certainly hints at potential future developments and leaves viewers optimistic. Regrettably, we don’t get to witness more than this interaction, as Danny attends the final Reagan family dinner alone in the show’s finale.
There’s an unseen reason why the couple didn’t go public on the show. Executive producer Kevin Wade revealed to Deadline that time constraints were a factor in their decision. In their final scene together, there was a subtle hint suggesting they might leave the squad room for dinner and end up at one of their homes. However, it felt like a significant leap, with just two minutes remaining and after 14 years of the series, to reveal their romantic relationship so abruptly during that dinner, according to Wade. Despite numerous hints throughout Season 14 about Baez and Danny’s relationship evolving from platonic to romantic, there wasn’t enough time left, in his opinion, to fully develop this plotline.
In the interest of fairness to the series, it should be noted that Maria attended her first Reagan dinner during Season 11, an event that moved Marisa Ramirez deeply at the time. Additionally, one of the show’s actors passionately advocated for fans to see some payoff in the Danny and Maria storyline, going so far as to directly approach a writer and request that particular scene.
Donnie Wahlberg fought for the pizza scene to be included
Donnie Wahlberg advocated for Maria and Danny to have their time in the spotlight, but initially hesitated about involving them romantically. He explained his reasoning to Variety by saying, “As the audience began expressing a desire for a romantic connection between Danny and Baez, I felt it was crucial for both of them to develop personally and for her character to influence him significantly, while he comes to truly respect her in a way that he hasn’t always respected others on the show.
As the end of the show approached, Wahlberg played a role in including the scene by urging writer Siobhan O’Connor to add it. He said, “I told her, ‘You know, you should do something. They don’t have to get married, but it would be nice to hint at a potential future for them or show their relationship has grown.’ In order to set up that pivotal moment, O’Connor wrote the scene featuring Danny and his grandfather, Henry (Len Cariou). This unexpected development left Wahlberg impressed with O’Connor’s writing skills.
At the moment, it’s unclear what lies ahead for Danny and Maria, but CBS has dropped some hints suggesting that a new “Blue Bloods” spin-off series might be on the horizon. It remains to be seen if the main characters in this potential series will be Danny and Maria or another member of the Reagan family.
