Blumhouse Adapts Bestselling Novel Darkly Into Exciting New TV Series

Over the last two decades, I’ve witnessed Blumhouse climb to become one of the towering figures in horror filmmaking. Their ascent began with the release of “Paranormal Activity” in 2007 – a budget-friendly horror gem that spawned a franchise now counting seven movies in total. In the first half of the 2010s, they dropped terrifying titles like “Insidious” (2011), “Sinister” (2012), and “The Purge” (2013). As the decade drew to a close, they gifted us with two installments of “Happy Death Day,” “Upgrade” from 2018, and a fresh take on “Halloween.” Throughout this period, they also churned out numerous original and sequel films in the horror genre.

Starting from 2020, Blumhouse Productions has been collaborating with distributors like Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures Releasing, and Amazon MGM Studios to produce over eight films annually. Notable releases include “The Black Phone” (2022), “M3GAN” (2023), “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (2023), and “Speak No Evil” (2024). The latest film under their belt is “Drop” (2025) directed by Christopher Landon. While movies are a significant part of Blumhouse, they also engage in other projects.

Blumhouse Will Adapt Darkly Into A TV Series

The YA Psychological Thriller Is A Bestseller

Blumhouse is transforming the series “Darkly” into a television program, with Jamie Lee Curtis serving as producer. Besides producing numerous films, Blumhouse also boasts a TV division known as Blumhouse Television. Although not as active as the film branch, Blumhouse TV has managed projects such as “The Bondsman“, “Worst Roommate Ever“, and “The Jinx“. The company has collaborated with Curtis on several ventures, including the latest reboot trilogy of “Halloween“.

The news emerges that rights to Marisha Pessl’s book, Darkly, have been secured by Blumhouse Television following a lively bidding process. Plans are underway to adapt this book into a television series. Curtis will oversee production through her company Comet Pictures, which enjoys a first-look agreement with Blumhouse Television. Jason Blum and Chris Dickie will also serve as executive producers for the TV show, representing Blumhouse Television and Pessl respectively.

Melissa Aouate will oversee the project’s development once she assumes her position as president at Blumhouse TV this month. As of now, a writer has not been appointed to pen the book adaptation; however, a search for one is underway. The synopsis of the psychological YA thriller novel can be found below:

The storyline of the Young Adult (YA) psychological thriller novel is presented below:

Arcadia “Dia” Gannon harbors an intense fascination for Louisiana Veda, the game designer whose compulsive game creations and company, Darkly, have garnered a fervent fanbase reminiscent of a cult. Dia is taken aback when she’s selected for a highly sought-after internship, joining six other teenagers from different corners of the globe. The question on her mind is, why was she chosen? Dia has never experienced any victories in her life.

Once a thriving company famous for creating inventive and eerily frightening toys and games, it now stands silent following the enigmatic demise of its founder, Veda. Remaining items from this once prolific production line are now valued like precious pieces of art, with some fetching astronomical figures at auction, reaching millions of dollars.

Delving deep into the enigmatic world of Darkly as an intern alongside my fellow explorers, I uncovered cryptic symbols, concealed hints, and a tangled web of mystery. Who are these other teenagers, and what dark secrets do they harbor? The reasons for their selection remain elusive. Unraveling the truth within this twisted maze of Darkly is the key to understanding it all.

What This Means For Blumhouse

The Company Could Make A Splash In TV

Blumhouse Television has been thriving in cinema, but hasn’t quite matched that success in television yet. However, shows like “The Bondsman“, featuring Kevin Bacon, and “The Jinx” were well-received, particularly as scripted series. Additionally, “Worst Roommate Ever” has been a hit within the true-crime documentary genre. The upcoming series, “Darkly“, could catapult Blumhouse TV into a higher tier due to its source material. Last November, the book became a top-selling national bestseller, ensuring that the show will attract a substantial existing audience.

Since no creative team has been formed yet to produce the show titled “Darkly“, it’s premature to forecast its critical response. However, given the nature of the novel’s plot, it appears that it could align well with Blumhouse Productions’ approach. Known for producing affordable projects with a strong audience appeal, “Darkly” seems to fit this model. As development progresses, it’s worth keeping an eye on “Darkly“, as its potential success is promising.
