As a seasoned horror movie enthusiast and a die-hard fan of the original, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the remake of “Speak No Evil“. However, after hearing about James McAvoy’s involvement, my curiosity piqued, and I couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of excitement.
Fear not, ardent supporters of the initial release, as tongues are conspicuously absent from mouths in the reboot of the 2022 horror movie “Speak No Evil”. Meanwhile, Blumhouse’s reinvention of the Danish film “Gæsterne“, also known as “The Guests“, is projected to earn a substantial domestic opening weekend, ranging from around $12 million to potentially as high as $20 million (according to Boxoffice Pro). Some moviegoers and admirers of the original may find themselves puzzled by this remake so soon. The rationale behind it boils down to financial gain, with actor James McAvoy likely to entice viewers.
Blumhouse is highly respected for its achievements in creating movies within the growing horror genre. Notably, the film “Speak No Evil” is anticipated to have a larger opening weekend than Blumhouse’s earlier 2024 releases, “Night Swim” ($11.8 million) and “Imaginary” ($9.9 million). However, Christian Tafdrup’s 2022 version of “Speak No Evil” didn’t appeal to a wide audience – it scored 55% on the Popcornmeter – but was highly praised by critics, earning an 84% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, Blumhouse made a smart decision during the casting of their remake by securing McAvoy to play the main character, Patrick, who is portrayed as a serial killer.
By choosing James McAvoy for the lead antagonist, the remake is guaranteed to have a distinctive flair, an elegance that can only come from having the talented X-Men actor on board. Let’s not forget about McAvoy’s impressive performance in another Blumhouse production, M. Night Shyamalan’s movie “Split.” His portrayal of those 24 distinct characters demonstrated undeniably that he has the acting abilities to convincingly bring a villain to life in “Speak No Evil.”
‘James McAvoy Was Absolutely Phenomenal in Every Take’
It’s still uncertain if James McAvoy’s film ‘Speak No Evil’ will join the top Blumhouse productions, but with nominations at the Golden Globes and People’s Choice Awards, McAvoy fits the role of the troubled character Patrick exceptionally well. Moreover, co-star Scoot McNairy has been praising McAvoy’s performance, calling it “absolutely phenomenal.” In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, McNairy shared his thoughts.
“James McAvoy truly shone in every scene, delivering performances that were simply astounding, though much of it didn’t make the final edit. Working with him was a joy because he’s such an engaging actor to observe day by day. To put it simply, I had a fantastic experience working alongside him. Moreover, his talent is vast, and he can be captivatingly unpredictable on screen – he was just exceptional.”
McNairy went on to acknowledge the rest of the talented cast as well. Aisling Franciosi plays McAvoy’s terrifying on-screen spouse, Ciara, while Mackenzie Davis portrays McNairy’s character’s partner, Louise Dalton. During the same interview, McNairy expressed:
Working together was an absolute joy. The entire cast was fantastic. I believe this film is going to be a hit. We’re all gathered in one spot at one time for this project. And I truly think the movie is excellent. I’m confident that audiences are going to enjoy it. This new version will certainly take you on an exciting journey, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it. The original was equally well-crafted, yet unique, but this remake promises to be a delightful experience.
