Bob Gale, the writer of the popular sci-fi series “Back to the Future,” has expressed his thoughts on whether there might be a follow-up. Gale, who co-wrote the first movie with Robert Zemeckis and then wrote the subsequent ones alone, bluntly states that he is tired of being asked about it.
The author recently attended the Saturn Awards alongside Christopher Lloyd (known as Emmett “Doc” Brown) and Lea Thompson (also recognized as Lorraine Baines McFly, or Marty’s mom). According to an article by Collider, Gale shares the same sentiments expressed by Zemeckis and others regarding the franchise’s enduring legacy.
Often, people ask us when we’re making Back to the Future 4. Our response? We simply say, ‘We appreciate your enthusiasm, but let’s focus on other projects for now.’ And feel free to attribute that statement to me.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about the unforgettable journey of “Back to the Future,” a cinematic masterpiece brought to life by the brilliant minds of Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. During Hollywood’s golden age in the 1980s, this iconic film benefited from the full backing of executive producer Steven Spielberg, who was then hailed as the industry’s rising star. The movie, which went on to rake in over $381 million at the box office, was a testament to their collective genius. A significant portion of the production budget, approximately what it took to reshoot scenes after Eric Stoltz was replaced by Michael J. Fox, contributed to its eventual success.
In 1985, this film was the biggest box office hit and earned four Academy Award nominations. Interestingly, despite its revolutionary visual effects, it didn’t receive a nomination in that category. However, it did win an Oscar for Best Sound. What’s more, it set a new record in 1986 for being the most-rented VHS tape.
Following the massive success of “Back to the Future,” Universal Pictures approached Gale and Zemeckis about a sequel. At first, the creative minds behind the time-travel film were hesitant as they believed a follow-up could tarnish the reputation the initial movie had established. However, after some deliberations, they agreed to create “Back to the Future Part II” mainly because Universal Pictures was likely to proceed without them, and the “To Be Continued” caption had already been added in the home release version of the film.
‘Back to the Future’ is One of the Few Blockbuster Franchises Without a Legacy Sequel or Remake
Interestingly enough, Zemeckis and Gale didn’t just agree to one sequel, but two! Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III were filmed consecutively and hit theaters on November 22, 1989, and May 25, 1990. Both films were box office hits. The third film wrapped up the storyline gracefully, making a return to these characters or their tales redundant. However, no further movies featuring them were produced after that. At least, not in cinemas.
In 2020, “Back to the Future: The Musical” made its debut. Composed by Gale with music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri, who originally scored the movies, and Glen Ballard, this live adaptation was widely acclaimed as a fitting homage to the films. Notably, it includes the on-stage recreation of the iconic DeLorean car.
Indeed, this is typically his reply when fans inquire about a potential fourth Back to the Future film. Here’s what he shared with Collider:
Having produced three fantastic films, there was a strong demand for additional ‘Back to the Future’ content. Consequently, we created ‘Back to the Future: The Musical.’ Chris and Lea have had multiple opportunities to watch it.
In an era when the film industry appears to be excessively mining old intellectual properties without much reprieve, a new sequel to Back to the Future would undeniably be quite significant. It’s likely that it would feature a completely different cast, and its concept is robust enough to accommodate a contemporary narrative. Despite the potential for disappointment, it might only be a question of time before someone at Universal Pictures exerts sufficient pressure and discovers a way around the rules to produce Back to the Future Part IV.
