Bobby Deol claims trying ‘really hard’ to be a part of Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor’s Jab We Met: ‘It can be tough in the industry’

Bobby Deol recently spoke about a movie he worked tirelessly to bring to life – “Jab We Met” – which later turned into a beloved romantic film starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. In a recent chat, Bobby confided that he was deeply saddened when he was let go from the project, even though he played a significant part in its initial development.

Initially, Bobby encountered director Imtiaz Ali when he watched an early version of Socha Na Tha, featuring his relative Abhay Deol. Fascinated by Imtiaz’s narrative skills, he asked the movie creator to draft a screenplay for him. Later on, this script evolved into Jab We Met.

In my fervent enthusiasm, I left no stone unturned in my mission to bring that movie to life. I reached out to numerous individuals, and even persuaded Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision to invest in Imtiaz, a promising director who was relatively green at the time.

Initially, both Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta were approached for the main role, but both initially declined. Later, Kareena reconsidered and agreed to join the project, but unfortunately, Bobby was no longer involved by then. Eventually, Shahid Kapoor took on the male lead role in the project.

The movie turned out to be an enormous success and is still renowned for the captivating chemistry between Shahid and Kareena, as well as Imtiaz’s distinctive direction. However, Bobby found the experience to be a mix of sweet and bitter emotions. “The industry can be challenging; I was genuinely distraught about it at the time,” he admitted. Yet, he showed no resentment towards Imtiaz Ali, hinting that the director probably had to make a hard choice for the betterment of the film.
