As a seasoned guide to modern living, I’ve always been captivated by the vibrant tapestry of the Indian film industry. For generations, it has been ruled by veterans like Mithun Chakraborty. Following in his footsteps, his youngest son, Namashi Chakraborty, entered the scene with his debut in ‘Bad Boy’ (2020). More recently, this budding talent voiced an opinion that stirred some controversy: he labeled certain individuals within Bollywood as disingenuous, pointing out what he perceives as favoritism lurking within its ranks.
In a conversation with Who’s On Air hosted by Kamlksh Shetty, Namashi Chakraborty discussed his Bollywood journey, his famed father Mithun Chakraborty, nepotism, and various other topics. It was during this chat that he expressed that, astonishingly, his legendary father still doesn’t act like a star, even though he was the biggest star of his era.
Speaking about senior Chakraborty as a “modest, sincere, and genuine man”, the newcomer from Bad Boy movies mentioned that his father isn’t like typical Bollywood celebrities. Namashi asserted, “Bollywood personalities tend to be insincere; my father is an exceptional case.” The rising actor highlighted that his entertainment industry icon stands out due to his self-made status.
Apart from this, he ventured into time travel and remembered that during his father’s professional setback in the mid-90s, he starred in nearly a hundred low-budget action movies in Ooty. At that time, he was labeled as a “B-list actor.” As he put it, “He created his own film industry, but the media never gave him their backing; they favored others.” This is how the young man expressed his thoughts on the matter.
In the very same conversation, I passionately echoed my thoughts about the ongoing insider vs outsider debate within the Hindi film world. I fervently asserted that Bollywood appears to have overlooked the talented outsiders, focusing instead on names, connections, and backgrounds. This, I believe, could be why we no longer see the extraordinary stars the industry once produced.
Namashi expressed his viewpoint that previously, anyone with raw talent could succeed in the entertainment industry. However, he feels that nowadays, if a newcomer like Mithun Chakraborty emerges from Bengal, Bollywood may not be keen on launching him or providing him an opportunity. He emphasized that today’s industry doesn’t place much faith in unknown talents; instead, it’s all about the fame associated with a name. In conclusion, Namashi suggested that rather than seeking fresh talent, they look for famous surnames.
