Since Daniel Craig concluded his tenure as James Bond following 2021’s “No Time to Die“, there has been ongoing conjecture and anticipation among media outlets and fans regarding the actor who will don the tuxedo next. As of late, Tom Hardy appears to be a leading candidate, but names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Josh O’Connor, and James Norton have also been frequently mentioned. However, according to renowned director Martin Campbell, who helmed the first Pierce Brosnan Bond film (“GoldenEye“) as well as the debut of Daniel Craig (“Casino Royale“) – all these speculations can be dismissed as “nonsense.” As Campbell shared with MovieWeb in an interview, any rumor you’ve heard about an actor being cast as the next Bond is likely unfounded.
Campbell, having witnessed Craig being selected for the role initially, expressed skepticism about the publicity. “They always exaggerate,” he said. “They constantly suggest names for a role, and it’s one thing after another, with everyone mentioning different names. It’s all just talk.” He further added:
The identity of the next James Bond isn’t set in stone until Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, the producers, make their decision. It always amuses me when I see lists online speculating about potential Bonds before Daniel Craig. To be honest, most of these are just guesswork because many actors who appear on those lists were never seriously considered for the role. So, it’s anyone’s guess!
Casting Daniel Craig as James Bond
According to Campbell, it’s ultimately up to Barbara Broccoli at Eon Productions to decide who will be the next James Bond, and once a decision is made, we’ll find out. As Campbell recalls, none of the rumors about the previous Bond casting were true. In other words, only when the new Bond is officially chosen will we know for certain.
In essence, when we chose Daniel Craig for the role, it was actually Barbara Broccoli who initiated this decision. Frankly, I never imagined Daniel would play James Bond, and indeed, she proved correct in her choice. He wasn’t exactly an unknown actor, but he wasn’t widely recognized either. And let me tell you, he excelled in that role as 007. Much like with our current situation, it might turn out the same way here.
When asked about who Campbell believes would make a fantastic next Bond, he candidly admitted, “To be honest, I haven’t the slightest idea.” Notably, Campbell will helm Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen in the forthcoming action-thriller titled “Cleaner,” set to release on February 21, 2025. His previous project, “Dirty Angels,” is currently accessible on digital platforms and on demand.
