As a long-time Potterhead and having played the beloved character of Ginny Weasley across all eight Harry Potter films, I must say that I’m both excited and hopeful about HBO’s upcoming reboot. The opportunity to adapt each book into a season, rather than cramming them into feature films, is not just a chance to expand on the un-adapted elements of J.K. Rowling’s books but also to give justice to the relationships, like that between Ginny and Harry, which were rushed in the movies.
Although some enthusiasts have already expressed dissatisfaction about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter remake, this new series offers an opportunity to explore unexplored aspects from J.K. Rowling’s cherished novels. Notably, actress Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in all the Harry Potter films and gradually evolved into a key member of Harry’s circle — eventually becoming his romantic interest in the later installments, has some thoughts. The portrayal of Ginny and Harry’s relationship in the movies significantly deviated from the books, with one of the film series’ primary complaints being the hasty presentation of their romance.
At this year’s Back to Hogwarts event, Bonnie Wright expressed her hope that the upcoming HBO series would give justice to the relationship between Ginny and Harry, as depicted in the books. Unlike previous adaptations, which combined multiple novels into movies, this new series plans to retell each book individually, releasing one season per book instead.
According to Wright, the longer runtime provides ample space to delve into the intricate facets of their relationship, letting it grow organically instead of rushing it into the final movies. When queried about her expectations for the upcoming series, the actress elaborated on what she’d like to see.
I’d like to explore further the progression of Ginny and Harry’s relationship, with subtle instances showing their growing affection. I’m particularly interested in how Ginny transforms into a devoted ally to Harry, who truly grasps his journey and identity. She seems perfect for him, and I’m eager to witness this character development. Additionally, I hope we delve deeper into the growth of other characters as well. If only the movies could be longer, there are so many characters with memorable moments from the books – Neville and Luna, for example – that I’d love to see more on screen.
There Will Be “More Pressure” on the New Harry Potter Cast
Prior to the Harry Potter books being turned into motion pictures by Warner Bros., they had amassed a devoted fanbase. However, the eight films in the series (excluding the Fantastic Beasts movies) have since become iconic symbols of the fantasy genre and are re-watched annually by millions. When the series became available on Netflix earlier this year, the movies consistently topped their Top 10 list for weeks.
Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films, doesn’t envy the actors who will be part of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Although the cast hasn’t been officially announced, whoever is chosen will face not only fans of J.K. Rowling’s books but also those of the movies. Wright hopes that the new actors won’t feel compelled to match the original films and instead bring their unique interpretations to the franchise. She stated:
“But I also think it’s such a fun opportunity for these people, whether how they’re cast or how they perform their roles, to just have fun with it and have their interpretation of it. I don’t think I would have any advice, to be honest, because I think it’s so important for them to be in their world and their interpretation of it. And I feel that’s so important, from an actor’s perspective, director’s perspective, to really make it their own. So I’m really looking forward just to being this time on the other side and be the one watching every week on television, and be the audience. And I really hope that the interpretations feel different and alive and new and fresh.”
