With the assistance of a script co-written by Michael Gilbert and Josh O’Connor (yes, that Josh O’Connor), the narrative is delightfully both silly and heartwarming, making it hard to find fault. The main characters are George and Max, portrayed by Joe Anders and Samuel Small, who are 16-year-old boys residing in a small English town. George may not excel academically, but his dreams lie within the music industry. When Max, the son of a renowned musician, enrolls at his school, the two team up to compose a song for the end-of-year talent show.
The story isn’t particularly intense or life-altering: Max being the son of a famous person creates gossip in tabloids, while George’s parents are experiencing relationship turmoil. However, these subplots could essentially be replaced with any other, as they primarily exist to support the main romance. Just like most romantic comedies, this story might be predictable, but due to its exceptional execution, it seems original and novel. Moreover, given the scarcity of queer romances in the past, every new addition to the genre is appreciated.
Smile-Inducing Romantic Chemistry
The success of this romantic comedy largely depends on the captivating chemistry between Anders and Small as the main characters. Thankfully, they both deliver in spades. Although both actors give stellar performances, Small truly shines when it comes to expressing amusement, genuine curiosity, and flirtation simultaneously through his glances. The realistic awkwardness and bumbling courtship between these two will make you grin at the screen uncontrollably. Bonus Track, much like the delightful Sing Street released in 2016, evokes a similar innocent allure due to its musical aspect.
Other critics have likened this romance to the show “Heartstopper,” given their shared theme of teenage schoolboys discovering love. Yet, while “Heartstopper” sometimes seems excessively earnest, leading to awkward dialogue and a condescending vibe, “Bonus Track” feels authentic. This is due to its ability to blend a generally heartwarming style with witty humor, more accurately capturing the complexities of being sixteen, especially for our protagonist who happens to be quite peculiar.
While Small’s portrayal of Max adds a touch of romance to the narrative, Anders’ interpretation of George is quirkily endearing. He appears awkward in social situations, dons his mother’s garments, and exhibits grumpiness reminiscent of a middle-aged man. Yet, there’s an unusual harmony in these seemingly disparate traits. A surprising moment comes when (spoiler alert) George’s parents announce they will be apart for some time, to which he responds by questioning if it’s due to his ear piercing. It’s clear how Max, despite their apparent differences, finds George appealing, even though they might seem an unlikely pair at first glance.
If Homophobia Didn’t Exist in 2006…

This stems from the fact that within this movie’s universe, no one exhibited homophobia in 2006 – a world some might find implausible or idealistic. However, one could counter that such portrayals are precisely what movies are meant for: to offer us glimpses of alternative realities. Conversely, this depiction benefits the narrative by providing an original path for the climax, avoiding the most predictable course of action.
Romantic comedies often adhere to a familiar pattern, and this one initially appeared predictable. However, instead of focusing on character conflict instigated externally, the plot revolves around characters undergoing growth. As a result, the narrative becomes unexpectedly captivating and emotionally fulfilling.
In many screen portrayals of LGBTQ+ romance, a significant source of conflict often involves homophobia. While it’s crucial that these stories are told to reflect real-life experiences, it’s equally important to have lighter, escapist romances that don’t solely focus on trauma. Achieving a balanced representation is key.
Some Subtlety, Thank God!
The personal development depicted at the peak of this narrative is skillfully handled. This growth resonates not just on an emotional and logical level, but also strikes a chord with viewers. Instead of a straightforward moral like “self-love leads to being loved” or “be true to yourself,” there’s a more profound, multifaceted message. The character George discovers that he has the power to direct his own life, for better or worse. While this may seem obvious, it’s one thing to comprehend it intellectually and another to truly grasp and embody it.
George’s inability to express his desires or emotions due to fear may not seem revolutionary, but the exceptional acting and emotional bond created between characters and viewers make these tense moments resonate deeply. Beyond the narrative arc of the character, the portrayal of how fear and anxiety can hinder one’s ability to be a supportive friend and companion is distressingly relatable. Moreover, it skillfully avoids melodrama, making it stand out among its contemporaries.
To put it simply, Bonus Track is nearly flawless due to its irresistible charm. In an era filled with overly polished romantic comedies lacking genuine chemistry, this film delivers what we’ve been craving for. Small yet impactful elements, such as a quirky appearance by Josh O’Connor in an unusual role and a carefully chosen soundtrack featuring artists like Hot Chip and Wheatus, significantly contribute to the movie’s atmosphere. This rom-com is not just worth watching; it’s a must-see if you want to find yourself smiling and tapping your feet with joy.
