As a movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of video game adaptations, from the sublime to the ridiculous, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Florian Munteanu‘s Krieg prequel aspirations. It’s not easy being a fan favorite in a flop film, especially when the studio seems to have written off the property as quickly as they wrote the script.
The movie titled “Borderlands” is currently showing in cinemas, but it’s unlikely to be there for much longer due to the negative reception it has received. Both audiences and critics have harshly criticized Eli Roth’s film, with many comparing it unfavorably to the video game movies made by Uwe Boll. However, one cast member who seems to have escaped consistent criticism, apart from Ariana Greenblatt, is Florian Munteanu. He plays the masked and brutal character Krieg, a well-known Vault Hunter from the video games that the movie is based on.
Prior to the release of the film, Munteanu attended media interviews, such as one with ComicBook. He was asked whether he would consider creating a prequel for his character if the initial movie proved successful. Here’s what he had to say about it:
“Absolutely! Creating a prequel seems incredibly appealing to me. The story is rich with details and I’m eager to learn more about the character’s background, particularly what shaped him into who he is. As a fan, I’m curious about his experiences, including his complex personality traits and the challenges that come with them. If you’ve played the games, you understand why delving deeper into these aspects is so intriguing.”

A Borderlands Prequel Seems Unlikely
To tell it in my own words as a dedicated fan, I’d say something like: It appears that a prequel for Krieg is quite an unrealistic prospect right now. You see, if fans don’t show interest in a character’s introduction during the initial film, the studio understands they wouldn’t flock to a prequel either. Sometimes, a movie might introduce a character who instantly becomes a beloved favorite, but then the prequel may struggle at the box office (looking at you, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”). The video games offer numerous main installments and spin-offs, which would provide ample material for future films if the first had been a box office hit.
