As a seasoned travel journalist with a knack for seeking out the most unique and offbeat experiences around the globe, I’ve seen my fair share of extraordinary sights and met countless intriguing characters. But none have left me quite as bewildered and amused as my recent encounter with Claptrap, that lovable rogue of a robot.

Millions of people have been eagerly anticipating the release of “Borderlands,” one of the most highly-publicized movies of the summer. To build the excitement, a beloved character from the franchise, the wisecracking and chunky robot Claptrap, voiced by Jack Black, has been sharing his cross-country journey on Instagram in a series of humorous and endearing posts. Join us as we catch up on Claptrap’s extraordinary adventure and share our latest update. For those who may not be familiar, here’s a brief summary of “Borderlands” and the newest trailer:

In the unfathomable chaos of Pandora, planet of mayhem in the cosmos, the notoriously elusive bounty hunter, Lilith (Blanchett), is compelled to return. Her purpose: locating the missing child of Atlas (Ramírez), an infamous universe bully with immense power. In this quest, Lilith joins forces with a band of unlikely companions: Roland (Hart), an experienced mercenary on a personal mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a wild pre-teen demolitions expert; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s protective musclebound guardian; Tannis (Curtis), the quirky scientist who’s witnessed it all; and Claptrap (Black), a sassy robot with a knack for wit.

In this adventure, an unconventional team of heroes, facing off against formidable foes – aliens and bandits, must work together to unearth Pandora’s most volatile secret. The stakes are high as the destiny of the entire universe hangs in the balance. Yet, their motivation extends beyond just saving the cosmos; they’re fighting for their bond with each other. Rooted in one of the best-selling video game franchises ever, join us on the thrilling journey of Borderlands.

Claptrap Crashes on Earth in the Borderlands of Los Angeles

The adventure started on June 25th, with Claptrap departing from Pandora and ending up on Earth in an unexpected crash-landing. As you can see in the Instagram post below, our Claptrap model may have made a mistake in navigating through the galaxy and now explores this place called Earth. Fortunately, it’s only moderately frightened. Keep following for updates on its destination.

It was discovered that Claptrap spent some time enjoying the sun at Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier, later making his way to the Hollywood sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Both fans and puzzled bystanders had the opportunity to engage with the bot directly. An Instagram post announced, “Los Angeles residents, if you come across this caretaking robot, kindly give directions to the nearest ATLAS shuttle station. #ClapTrappedInLA.”

Viva Clap Vegas & Houston, We Have a Claptrap

Traveling toward the East, ClapTrap found itself unable to resist a visit to the vibrant city of Las Vegas. The sight of the small robot rolling through the streets illuminated by neon lights was an unusual spectacle. However, things became even more peculiar when ClapTrap rolled onto the set of local TV news, Fox 5. Here’s a look at that intriguing interview:

As I left Caesars Palace and the bustling Vegas Strip behind, my journey continued with Claptrap as we ventured through the heart of Texas. However, things didn’t go smoothly in Houston and Austin – I found myself lost in their mazelike streets for a while. But hey, every detour led to some unexpected adventures! Here are a few surprises we encountered along the way:

  • Houston
    • Space Center Houston
    • Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park
    • Astros World Series Ring @ Minute Maid Park
    • Buc-ees
    • Appearance at 104.1 KRBE & FOX 26 Houston
  • Austin
    • Appearance at Fox7 Austin
    • University of Texas-Austin
    • Texas State Capitol
    • Local murals
    • Terry Black’s Barbecue

As a big fan of Claptrap hailing from Texas, I’m thrilled to share that he’s embarking on an exciting journey to St. Louis, Missouri! He’ll be gracing the screens of Great Day St. Louis and making some splashes at Marcus Theatres and the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station. And let’s not forget about trying a local brew and taking in the stunning views from the St. Louis Wheel. Claptrap’s got quite the itinerary, including stops at Busch Stadium and the iconic Gateway Arch. Keep up with his adventures by following his Instagram story here!

Lost in Chicago and Feeling Philly

In Chicago, the lively city of improvisation and home to The Bean, Wrigley Field, The Chicago Theatre, The Second City, and The Art Institute, Claptrap from St. Louis made several visits. For refueling, it indulged in deep dish pizza at Giordanos and savored hot dogs at Wrigleyville Dogs.

Philadelphia, known as the city of brotherly love, didn’t want to be left behind and welcomed Claptrap with open arms. Claptrap made an appearance on local radio station The New 96.5, paid a visit to iconic landmarks such as the Rocky Statue and the Rocky Steps, Independence Hall, and Lincoln Financial Field. And no trip to Philadelphia would be complete without trying a classic Philly Cheesesteak from Pat’s King of Steaks.

Claptrap: Lost in New York

If Claptrap managed to navigate New York City, it can handle any challenge! Yes, this quirky character took a vacation in the Big Apple, causing traffic jams and startling onlookers. Amidst the chaos of Radio City, Times Square, and the intricate subway system, Claptrap eventually made its way to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s stage.

I wish Claptrap had stayed put during San Diego Comic-Con’s excitement. Now, it’s moving westward, making its way to Knoxville, Tennessee. Take a look at its latest adventures below: the Sunsphere, the captivating Dolly Parton mural, and the bustling downtown streets of this Scruffy City.

After that, Claptrap journeys back to California, heading straight for Comic-Con in San Diego. It’s unclear where else this charming robot might go, but we know it will be on the silver screen when Borderlands premieres in theaters on August 9th, brought to us by Lionsgate.
