Bowen Yang Says Aimee Lou Wood’s Criticism of ‘White Lotus’ Parody on ‘SNL’ Is “Completely Valid”

Bowen Yang is supporting Aimee Lou Wood, standing by her side after she voiced criticisms regarding the recent “White Lotus” spoof on the most recent “Saturday Night Live” broadcast.

On the late-night comedy series that week, hosted by Jon Hamm, Saturday Night Live (SNL) parodied the final episode of Mike White’s popular show, giving it a unique Donald Trump makeover. In this skit, characters from the original show were replaced with the president, his family, and cabinet members. Interestingly, Chelsea, the character from White’s ‘White Lotus’ portrayed by Sarah Sherman, wasn’t interchanged. Instead, Sherman donned a set of fake teeth for her role in the sketch.

Previously, the sketch was criticized by Wood as “unfunny” and “rude”, with particular focus on Sherman’s perceived mockery of her character and her British accent. She also added that it would be nice if the accent were portrayed correctly, even if the sketch was mean-spirited, because she values accuracy.

In a recent chat with Extra, Yang expressed that Wood’s response to the sketch was entirely understandable. He also pointed out the often-overlooked human and emotional toll such situations can have on individuals.

The SNL star went on to say, “Everyone associated with SNL is simply an ardent admirer of the program, undeniably a fan of her. We believe she should be incredibly proud of the effort she invested in the season; it was once more addictive television that we yearn for. Therefore, I feel it’s something we sometimes overlook, and this is a gentle nudge as a reminder. It appears she has discussed the matter with people at the show, and I hope there’s an opportunity to put it behind us.

Yang pointed out that it’s beneficial to remember occasionally that satire can sometimes overstep boundaries, and as comedians, we have a responsibility to acknowledge this rather than merely asserting our freedom to say anything,” Yang explained. “This isn’t about being politically correct or trendy, it’s simply about understanding what’s appropriate.

Following her criticism of the sketch on Instagram Stories, she subsequently mentioned that she “received apologies from SNL.” Additionally, she stated that Sherman sent her flowers as a gesture of apology.
