Box Office: ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Digs Up Record $10.6M in Thursday Previews

The timing for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie” couldn’t be more perfect. This film, inspired by the hugely successful children’s video game, raked in an astounding $10.6 million during its Thursday pre-release screenings, setting a new record.

Previously, the movie adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s boasted the highest preview earnings among video game adaptations, amounting to approximately $10.3 million.

Should the demand for a Minecraft film persist, it’s likely that this high-profile production could gross over $75 million upon its release, and this estimate is rather modest. At present, the domestic box office is struggling significantly, and a successful run by Minecraft might provide the encouragement that Hollywood studios and cinema owners desperately need following the underperformance of films like Disney’s Snow White.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the news that Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen are set to star in “A Minecraft Movie”. Just last weekend, I heard rumors that there was a world premiere for this film in London, which might explain why they weren’t present at Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation this week. With all the buzz surrounding potential changes in leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery, there have been whispers that chief David Zaslav is considering replacing Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy as studio heads.

The film, titled “Minecraft“, proved to be a success for the duo, however, Legendary’s May Parent played an instrumental role in its creative direction. She also facilitated the recruitment of Jared Hess, known for his work on “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre“, to take up directing duties.

In this movie, which shares its name with a popular video game, we follow the journey of four oddball characters who are mysteriously transported into a peculiar, cubical realm that feeds on creativity. To return home, they must adapt to their strange new environment and venture on a mission alongside an unanticipated artisan mentor. Here, Black assumes the role originally played by the renowned character Steve.

Minecraft opens day and date around the world.
