As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for sci-fi and horror, I can hardly contain my excitement for Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus. Having grown up with the original Alien franchise, the prospect of diving back into this terrifying universe is like finding an old friend in the darkest corner of a haunted video game.
Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” generated an impressive $6.5 million during its Thursday previews, indicating that this eagerly awaited August release could potentially earn over $40 million, which would be a promising start for the film and another success story for Disney’s cinematic empire as well as the overall summer box office.
Up until this week, both the 20th Century and Disney have been waiting for reviews, a tactic that has proven successful. The film currently boasts an 82% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which may help it appeal to audiences beyond its primary demographic of older males who were raised on the iconic franchise.
The upcoming eighth movie in the extended Alien series takes place between the stories told in Ridley Scott’s original 1979 Alien and James Cameron’s 1986 follow-up, Aliens. (Notably, Scott is a producer for this new film titled Romulus.)
An R-rated film narrates the tale of a group of youthful settlers discovering an abandoned spacecraft, only to face the terrifying presence of a legendary alien being that has become synonymous with this movie series. The cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn.
Initially, it was planned for Romulus to premiere directly on streaming platforms like Hulu, which is owned by Disney. However, during the initial filming phase, the studio decided to release it in cinemas instead. As Álvarez shared with The Hollywood Reporter in a detailed interview in March, “When we began shooting, the studio said, ‘Forget it, let’s release this in theaters.'”
The film opens in theaters everywhere Friday, as well as across the world.
More to come.
