Box Office: Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Eyes $18M-$20M U.S. Launch, Slapped With B CinemaScore

Movie director Bong Joon Ho’s science fiction space film titled Mickey 17 is now available in cinemas, and early predictions suggest it will earn between $18 million and $20 million domestically during its opening weekend. Although this figure is slightly lower than anticipated, it’s still a substantial amount that will likely secure the top spot on the box office charts following its strong start on Friday with $7.7 million in ticket sales.

Everyone is eagerly awaiting the upcoming Warner Bros. and Plan B film, as it’s been postponed several times and serves as a follow-up project by director Bong, following his win for Best Picture with “Parasite.

The movie hasn’t been receiving overwhelming praise from either the critics or the audience. It has a good, yet not exceptional 78% rating by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score stands at 79%. However, it was given a ‘B’ grade by CinemaScore.

Sci-fi films are often hard to market, and the fact that Mickey 17 cost over $118 million to make only adds to its challenge to succeed at the box office (Warner Bros. has been facing difficulties lately). However, abroad it’s already earned a promising $18.7 million, with a significant $11.4 million coming from South Korea, Bong’s homeland, bringing its total global earnings to $26.4 million by Friday.

In a witty sci-fi story set in an emerging ice settlement, Robert Pattinson portrays Mickey Barnes, a character who is repeatedly recreated and meets his demise multiple times. Alongside him, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Colette, and Mark Ruffalo lend their talents to the cast. The intriguing world of this film was first introduced in Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7, which revolves around Mickey Barnes, the seventh version of the protagonist.

In another location, the fourth release of Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” dropped to second place, earning approximately $8.7 million over the weekend. This brings its total domestic earnings close to $177 million.

A fierce competition appears to be developing among three contenders for the third position at the box office. These are the deep-sea thriller titled “Last Breath”, the family movie named “Paddington in Peru”, and another film called simply “The Monkey“. Each of these movies seems poised to earn approximately $4 million.

The film “The Monkey” hails from independent distribution company Neon, the same house that produced this year’s Academy Award-winning movie “Anora.” Moreover, it’s worth noting that Tom Quinn’s Neon is also the home of the critically and commercially successful “Parasite.

Following the impressive showing of Anora at last Sunday’s Oscars, the movie has been screened in approximately 1,750 theaters this weekend and is experiencing a significant surge. If predictions hold true, it could earn a substantial $1.8 million, bringing its total domestic earnings to around $18.3 million.
