In my gaming world, I found myself revisiting Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World for its second round, and it continued to reign on the local charts, earning an impressive $28.3 million, even though there was a significant drop of 68%. It’s like this game just won’t let go of the top spot!
The movie isn’t the poorest performer – some Marvel films have dropped by 70% or more – and it still has time before another major release to regain its footing. On the positive note, the film is continuing to draw a diverse ethnic audience and many families (the movie is particularly popular with boys). However, on the downside, it might struggle to fully recover from receiving a B- CinemaScore, which is the worst grade in Marvel’s history. Notably, Brave New World was produced during a period when Marvel was stretched quite thin.
Over the Valentine’s Day/President’s Day weekend last weekend, the movie Brave New World surpassed predictions by earning approximately $100 million in North America. Specifically, it made around $88.4 million across the three days.
Initially, the movie garnered $192.4 million worldwide upon its release, with $92.4 million coming from international markets. Over this weekend, it added another $35.3 million to its foreign earnings, bringing its total global earnings to approximately $289.4 million.
In the latest movie, Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson assumes the role of Captain America, a shift from Chris Evans who previously played the part. With an estimated production cost of $180 million, excluding marketing, this film shuns sci-fi elements and is more grounded in reality, as described by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. This film, in essence, resembles “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from 2014, featuring Evans and introducing Mackie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, without any multiverse involvement.
Under the guidance of director Julius Onah, Brave New World features Harrison Ford as the newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. In this film, Ross proposes that Captain America join the military in an official capacity. However, before Wilson can make a choice, he stumbles upon a sinister worldwide conspiracy. This plot twist leads to a confrontation with Ross when the president inexplicably transforms into the Red Hulk. Alongside Ford, Danny Ramirez portrays Joaquin Torres/Falcon, while Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson and Rosa Salazar also appear.
Finishing second, just behind, with an impressive $14.2 million earning, was Osgood Perkins’ film “The Monkey”. This chilling horror production revolves around a duo of twins and their ominous childhood plaything. The movie, costing approximately $10 million, takes some inspiration from a short story by Stephen King.

In second place, raking in an impressive $14.2 million, was Osgood Perkins’ movie “The Monkey”. This horror film, with a budget of roughly $10 million, loosely follows a short story by Stephen King and centers on the lives of twins and their mysterious childhood toy.
The R-rated film achieved the second highest opening in the history of special distributor Neon, known for hit movies like Oscar winner “Parasite” and current awards frontrunner “Anora,” which added more awards to its collection this weekend by winning top prizes at the Independent Spirit Awards.
After the success of his previous work, “Longlegs,” the frightening neon masterpiece that made a staggering $22.4 million on its opening weekend, The Monkey is Perkins’ subsequent creation.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but express my awe at the extraordinary debut of “The Monkey.” Horror maestros Osgood Perkins, James Wan, and Stephen King have skillfully orchestrated a heart-stopping rollercoaster ride that has redefined the horror genre. This exhilarating journey has left audiences nationwide on the edge of their seats with unforgettable thrills. Elissa Federoff, Neon distribution chief, perfectly captured this experience when she said it was a wildly entertaining good time for all.
King endorsed the film and was quite open about it being distinct from his other adaptations. He even characterized the venture as “utterly madcap” or “completely crazy.
The Monkey also marked the top horror opening of 2025. And like may horror titles, it earned a C+.
In third place, earning $6.5 million, was Paddington’s Peruvian adventure, closely trailed by Dog Man with $5.9 million, and Ne Zha 2, the sensational Chinese animation, bringing in $3 million. Notably, Ne Zha 2 has now set a record as the highest-grossing animated film globally, raking in over $1.7 billion at box offices worldwide.
More to come.
