Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Back on Top as ‘Blink Twice’ Struggles and ‘The Crow’ Collapses

As a cinephile with decades of movie-going experience under my belt, I must say that this weekend’s box office offerings seem to have missed their mark – much like a misguided punchline at a comedy club. The suspense thriller “Blink Twice” and the “The Crow” reboot, both promising entries, have unfortunately stumbled out of the gate.

New players at the late-summer box office are struggling to find their footing.

Currently, movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, and It Ends With Us are dominating cinema screens in August, outperforming the latest releases such as the suspenseful thriller Blink Twice and the reboot of The Crow.

As a passionate gamer, I’m excited about Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, “Blink Twice”, starring Channing Tatum. Initial projections suggest it will open in the fourth spot, earning around $7.1 million to $7.4 million. While I was expecting a stronger performance given the movie’s B- CinemaScore and generally positive reviews, it seems audiences didn’t quite connect with it as expected. Still, I’m looking forward to checking it out, especially since MGM and Amazon are behind it, with Warner Bros. taking care of its international release.

The tale revolves around tech mogul Slater King (Tatum), who extends an invitation to cocktail server Frida (Naomi Ackie) to join him and his companions for a fantastical getaway on his secluded island retreat. Nights filled with merriment merge into days bathed in sunlight, as everyone seems to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. However, as peculiar occurrences begin to unfold, Frida grows increasingly suspicious about the authenticity of her surroundings and comes to believe that something is not quite right.

30 years on from its initial release, I’m not expecting “The Crow” reboot, distributed by Lionsgate, to make it into the top five spots at the box office. Predictions suggest it will debut at No. 7, earning around $4.5 million to $5 million.

In this contemporary adaptation of the initial comic book by James O’Barr, Bill Skarsgard assumes the lead role. Similar to The Crow, this film also earned a B- rating from CinemaScore. However, unlike Blink Twice, it did not receive favorable reviews from critics.

Among all recently released movies, it’s only “The Forge,” a faith-based film, that has been highly praised by audiences. This movie is projected to earn more than $6 million and may even crack the top five box office earners, thanks to a favorable A- CinemaScore.

In its fifth week, the Marvel Studios and Disney film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine has regained the number one position at the box office, earning around $17 million to $18 million. Previously, it had been dethroned by 20th Century and Disney’s Alien: Romulus, which is now in second place during its second week, with an estimated revenue of $16 million.

Sony’s romantic drama “It Ends With Us,” featuring Blake Lively, is still captivating audiences and is projected to earn over $12 million, placing it third. Last week, it surpassed the global box office total of $200 million.

Numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
