Box Office Forecast Predicts Cloudy Skies for AfrAId & Reagan This Weekend

Box Office Forecast Predicts Cloudy Skies for AfrAId & Reagan This Weekend

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the Labor Day weekend box office forecast for 2024 is shaping up to be a rather predictable affair. The action-packed duo of Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to clean up at the box office, leaving little room for newcomers like AfrAId and Reagan to make a significant impact.

As summer gradually ends, it’ll pass without leaving a lingering scent on movie lovers’ memories, and then Labor Day will quietly arrive, heralding the last official weekend of the 2024 summer movie season. The upcoming weekend won’t see many new releases making a significant impact. Instead, it seems that “Deadpool & Wolverine” will dominate the box office with another estimated $13 million in domestic earnings. Two new contenders, “AfrAId” and the political drama “Reagan,” led by Dennis Quaid, may not have enough power to challenge the formidable duo of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s blockbuster.

Despite Variety stating that a film about Reagan could potentially earn between $5 million and $7 million, it’s uncertain if the movie about the Hollywood actor turned US President will make it to the Top 5 during the Labor Day weekend. This is because other promising candidates, such as “Alien: Romulus” and Blake Lively’s romantic drama “It Ends with Us,” are also in contention for the top spots.

This Labor Day weekend, Blumhouse’s “AfrAId” starring John Cho will attempt to scare up some cash. The movie features a murderous digital assistant named AIA, similar to a chilling Mr. Mom in the trailer. According to Boxoffice Pro, “AfrAId” may surpass “Reagan”, with predictions of an opening between $7 million and $12 million. Unfortunately, these numbers signal the end of summer on a grim note.

Luckily for the producers of “AfrAId” and “Reagan”, these films are unlikely to suffer the same level of criticism that “The Crow” did last weekend. In fact, six other movies outperformed Bill Skarsgård’s version of James O’Barr’s comics at the box office. However, in this instance, both “AfrAId” and “Reagan” have a good chance of making it into the Top 5 domestically. Theoretically, the rankings could look something like the following (below):

Projected Top 10 Domestic Box Office for Labor Day Weekend

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine
  2. Alien: Romulus
  3. It Ends with Us
  4. AfrAId
  5. Reagan

To put it simply, the two underdogs in the race are “Blink Twice”, which might find it hard to reach the Top 5, and that’s Channing Tatum’s collaboration with fiancé Zoë Kravitz. On the contrary, “The Forge” made a whopping $6.7 million during its premiere. Now, one might wonder how Alex Kendrick’s Christian drama, “The Forge”, could possibly advance or even maintain its position at No. 5 given these numbers?

Initially, “The Forge” debuted in just 1,818 theaters, whereas the top four films from last weekend’s box office chart were screened in at least 3,067 and as many as 3,840 cinemas each. If Kendrick’s spiritual spectacle expands to 3,000 theaters, it could potentially climb the rankings. (Revised Version)

1. In the second place, “The Forge” has achieved a staggering 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ newly named Popcornmeter (previously the RT audience score). With more than a thousand verified ratings, “The Forge” is generating quite the buzz. It’s not just hot, it’s “verified hot!” This rating could serve as both real-world and online endorsement, tempting potential cinema-goers to invest their money on this film instead of “AfrAId” or “Reagan.”

A group of less well-known debutants – none featuring characters with the nickname ‘Longlegs’ – consist of director Ariel Vromen’s film, ‘1992’, focusing on child trafficking (City of Dreams), and ‘Slingshot’, starring Laurence Fishburne and Casey Affleck. These movies are merely hoping for a place among the top 10 films in their category.

Unless an unprecedented upset similar to the No.16 seeds UMBC and FDU overpowering No.1 seeds Virginia and Purdue in March Madness occurs, it’s highly unlikely these three teams will even come close to reaching the Top 5, let alone achieving feats akin to Deadpool and Wolverine.
