Box Office Gets Glicked: ‘Wicked’ Eyes $117M Opening, ‘Gladiator II’ Heads for $60M

As someone who’s been a movie enthusiast for most of my life, I can confidently say that this weekend at the box office is shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular! The combination of Universal’s musical gem, Wicked, and Paramount’s epic sequel, Gladiator II, is making for an unforgettable pre-Thanksgiving cinematic feast.

It’s not at the level of Barbenheimer, but the combo of Universal’s musical Wicked and Paramount’s Gladiator II — call it Glicked, Wikiator or whatever you want — is making for a phenomenal weekend at the pre-Thanksgiving box office.

According to initial projections, the film “Wicked” appears to be opening domestically with approximately $117 million. Although this figure falls slightly short of the predicted $120 million, it’s still an impressive and record-breaking amount for a movie adapted from a Broadway musical. Notably, it ranks among the top openings ever for a musical film on a global scale. Worldwide, the movie is projected to debut with around $165 million.

The anticipated opening for Gladiator II is projected to be around $60 million domestically, which is a robust start for a film centered on swords and sandals with a predominantly male audience. (It’s expected to draw massive crowds internationally as well.) The total domestic earnings for all films this weekend are estimated to reach approximately $200 million, marking a 70% increase over the same weekend last year when Napoleon and Wish were released.

There’s been a lot of chatter online suggesting that movies like Gladiator II and Wicked might follow the trend set by Barbenheimer this weekend, becoming a popular choice for both male and female cinema-goers. Although they may not reach the domestic opening figures of Barbie ($162 million) or Oppenheimer ($82.5 million), these films are attracting interest across various demographics and cater to a diverse audience ethnically.

The upcoming marquee for Thanksgiving will become even more captivating as Walt Disney Animation’s “Moana 2” premieres on November 27th. With Moana leading the way, these three films are expected to generate the highest five-day domestic box office earnings during the Thanksgiving holiday (from Wednesday to Sunday), setting a new record for this period.

Predominantly appreciated by female spectators, as anticipated, the critically acclaimed film “Wicked” received an outstanding ‘A’ rating from moviegoers according to CinemaScore.

Filmmaker Jon M. Chu’s version of the well-known Broadway musical boasts a star-studded cast headed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Universal is taking a significant risk by creating two films, as the second part of Wicked will be shown in cinemas a year from now. The initial film cost approximately $150 million to produce, not including marketing expenses.

Wicked, inspired by Gregory Maguire’s popular novel, presents an unheard tale about the witches of Oz. In this adaptation, Erivo portrays Elphaba and Grande plays Glinda. Winnie Holzman, who penned the stage production’s script, wrote the screenplay for Chu, collaborating with Dana Fox. Stephen Schwartz, a multiple Academy Award winner in composition and lyric writing, adapted the musical to fit the big screen.

Under Ridley Scott’s direction, the highly anticipated $250 million follow-up to the original Gladiator is garnering significant interest among both young and mature male audiences. This new installment, released 24 years after the first film, boasts an impressive cast that includes Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Fred Hechinger, among others, and has received a B rating from CinemaScore.

According to predictions, if the estimates are accurate, both Ridley Scott and Denzel Washington can expect their careers to experience record-breaking openings with the release of “Gladiator II”.

The movie features Mescal portraying an adult version of Lucius Verus II, who is the nephew of Emperor Commodus (previously played by Joaquin Phoenix in the original film). After being compelled into slavery, Lucius comes back to Rome where he doesn’t fight for rule but instead takes up the role of a gladiator, aiming for revenge and power. His ultimate goal is to restore Rome’s former grandeur to its people.

Updated numbers will be provided Sunday.
