Box Office: ‘Megalopolis’ Bombs With D+ CinemaScore, ‘Wild Robot’ Soaring to No. 1

As a movie enthusiast who has seen more films than I can count (and I mean that literally), it’s always intriguing to witness the ebb and flow of success in Hollywood. On one hand, we have “The Wild Robot”, a charming tale that’s captivating audiences and critics alike, reminiscent of the magical connection between technology and nature that I’ve always found fascinating. It’s no surprise it’s set to dominate the box office this weekend.

The heartwarming animated film “The Wild Robot,” produced by DreamWorks Animation and Universal Studios, is captivating both critics and audiences, with a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, as well as an A rating from cinema-goers. However, it’s a pity that the love for this film isn’t being shared more widely.

In a challenging period during his highly successful career, director Francis Ford Coppola is observing his latest production, Megalopolis, being largely ignored by cinema-goers. Critics too have been unkind to the film, and it’s possible that its domestic opening might not surpass $4.5 million. The audience’s CinemaScore for the movie was a poor D+.

Given its current speed, “The Wild Robot” seems poised for an effortless claim of the No. 1 position, raking in around $35 million on its opening week. This figure exceeds initial predictions, yet the film was widely expected to perform well, especially considering the success of Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment’s other PG-rated animated movie, “Transformers One,” which unexpectedly opened with $25.6 million, allowing “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to retain its third-week dominance.

In its second release, Transformers One, initially aimed at capturing both kids, parents, and adult fans, seems to be experiencing a significant 63% drop, projected to earn around $9 million. This would place it in the third position, surpassed by Wild Robot and Warner Bros’ popular Beetlejuice sequel.

The movie Wild Robot is adapted from Peter Brown’s beloved bestseller about a shipwrecked robot named ROZ who develops unexpected relationships with an orphaned gosling and various island creatures. Oscar nominee Chris Sanders, known for his work on How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods, directed and penned the film, exploring the connection between nature and technology. The star-studded voice cast includes Lupita Nyong’o, Kit Connor, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, and Stephanie Hsu, with Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames also lending their voices.

In my gaming world, it’s clear that Megalopolis isn’t shaping up for a top spot. Even with the legendary director Coppola at the helm, major studios in Hollywood have turned down the idea of funding or distributing this high-budget $120 million project in North America, based on their initial reactions to an early screening prior to its premiere at Cannes Film Festival. The film, featuring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, and Shia LaBeouf, is Coppola’s ambitious reinterpretation of the Roman Empire set against modern-day New York City on the verge of collapse. The reviews from Cannes were rather lukewarm.

In the end, Lionsgate agreed to distribute the film domestically, but they won’t be responsible for the distribution or marketing expenses. Additionally, Imax has shown support for Coppola as the director filmed some parts of the movie with Imax-approved cameras. The movie “Megalopolis” will run in approximately 200 Imax theaters during select screenings, which represents around half of the total Imax network.

Previously at the New York Film Festival, Coppola drew a parallel between the plot of his latest movie and the ongoing political landscape in the United States. He hinted that the 2024 presidential election might echo Rome’s decline. This comparison was broadcast to 65 cinemas spread across the U.S. and Canada, facilitated by Imax technology.

It appears that Coppola’s attempt to stir up critics of the Republican presidential candidate was not successful.

Contrary to expectation, supporters of Donald Trump are not flocking to watch “Vindicating Trump,” the latest documentary from conservative commentator and Trump backer Dinesh D’Souza, which delves into the challenges the Republican Party nominee faces in his quest to regain the Oval Office.

D’Souza’s film, collaboratively produced with Trump who has been actively promoting it, is currently being screened in 813 domestic theaters but may struggle to earn more than $820,000. Faith-based distributor SDG, known for hit mockumentary Am I Racist?, is managing the distribution of Vindicating Trump across North America. Key moments in the movie include D’Souza interviewing Trump after a bullet narrowly missed Trump’s ear.

In five cinemas situated in both New York and Los Angeles, Sony will unveil Jason Reitman’s movie titled Saturday Night, a tribute to the well-known NBC comedy series Saturday Night Live. The film is expected to show promising earnings of approximately $51,000 per theater.

More to come.
