Box Office Milestone: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Crosses $1B Globally on Way to Becoming Top R-Rated Pic of All Time

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the box office success of Deadpool 3, or should I say, Deadpool & Wolverine! The sheer magnitude of their achievement is nothing short of astounding. It’s like watching a superhero in real life, breaking records left and right!

As a movie enthusiast with over two decades of watching films under my belt, I can confidently say that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have truly made their mark in Hollywood. Having grown up watching both actors grace the silver screen, it’s fascinating to see them now join the exclusive billion-dollar box office club. Their iconic roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, have not only captivated audiences worldwide but also set new standards for superhero films. It’s a testament to their talent and dedication that they can consistently deliver blockbuster hits time and time again. I eagerly anticipate the next chapters in their respective careers and the unforgettable moments they will undoubtedly continue to create on the big screen.

Over the weekend, I was part of the record-breaking crowd who flocked to see Marvel Studios and Disney’s summer blockbuster. By Saturday, it had accomplished an extraordinary feat – raking in a whopping $1.029 billion worldwide! In the U.S., it grossed a staggering $494.3 million, while overseas sales totaled an impressive $535.2 million. This makes it the second R-rated film ever to surpass this incredible milestone in global ticket sales.

Led by Shawn Levy’s direction, the bold third installment of the Deadpool series marks a significant triumph for franchise architect Ryan Reynolds, Marvel Studios, and the superhero genre. This movie is the first superhero film to surpass $1 billion at the box office since Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released over two years ago, and it’s the first Marvel/Disney MCU picture to cross the $1 billion mark since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Additionally, the third movie in the bold superhero series is merely a few days from surpassing Warner Bros.’ and Todd Phillips’ Joker ($1.079 billion) to claim the title of highest-grossing R-rated film ever at the worldwide box office. Now, Deadpool & Wolverine stands second having overtaken Oppenheimer. In North America, it has already broken the record for highest-grossing R-rated film.

As a diehard gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of achievement when I learn that the epic clash between Deadpool and Wolverine (yeah, those guys!) has joined an exclusive club of movies that have grossed over $1 billion. It’s the 55th film to do so, making it quite the blockbuster!

Another significant point: It’s the second movie this year to enter the billion-dollar club, following its sister production from Disney/Pixar, Inside Out 2. This film now leads the pack as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, earning approximately $1.6 billion at global box offices. Interestingly, Disney is the first studio to release two films that each grossed over a billion dollars in a single year.

Since its release over the July 26-28 weekend, the team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine has been breaking records left and right. Notably, it surpassed the entire lifetime earnings of both the original Deadpool films, in both domestic and international markets, within just two weeks in theaters. The first Deadpool film made $363.1 million domestically and a total of $782.6 million worldwide; the second film earned $318.5 million domestically and a total of $734.5 million globally.

More to come.
