Box Office Milestone: ‘It Ends With Us’ Crosses $100 Million Globally in Its First Week

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various narratives, I can’t help but draw parallels between my virtual escapades and the real-life success story that is “It Ends With Us”. Just like how I navigate through complex game worlds, overcoming obstacles and uncovering hidden truths, this film seems to have captivated audiences in a similar way.

It Ends With Us has sailed past the $100 million mark at the global box office in its first week.

On Wednesday, the movie version of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel reached a significant achievement, earning a total of $115.5 million worldwide. In the U.S., it made $68.9 million, while its early foreign earnings amounted to $46.6 million. The film, starring Blake Lively, premiered in some international markets a day or two earlier than its North American release on August 9.

Over the Aug. 9-11 weekend, the summer movie released by Sony and Wayfarer Studios outperformed predictions, earning a whopping $50 million domestically. It ranked second, trailing slightly behind the third week of the superhero blockbuster “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds (Lively’s husband) and Hugh Jackman. However, on Monday, “It Ends With Us” surpassed the third installment of “Deadpool” and has since held the top spot.

In its initial release, the R-rated movie gathered an impressive $30 million across 42 foreign countries, bringing its worldwide total to $80 million. This is quite significant considering it had a relatively low production budget of just $25 million.

The story It Ends With Us revolves around the character Lily Bloom, played by Lively, who escapes a harrowing childhood marked by her father’s abuse of her mother and starts anew in Boston, pursuing her dream of owning a business. A fateful encounter with the captivating neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) ignites a powerful bond. As their love deepens, Lily recognizes certain characteristics in Ryle that echo her parents’ relationship. The unexpected return of her former lover, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), disrupts her relationship with Ryle, forcing Lily to lean on her inner strength to make a difficult decision about her future.

Baldoni, co-founder of Wayfarer Studios, directed the movie.

There’s a lot of anticipation about how the movie “It Ends With Us” will fare during its second weekend. It has minimal competition when it comes to films aimed at women and has received excellent audience feedback. Insiders from Sony are being careful in predicting earnings between $22 million and $24 million, but some believe it might even make slightly more, potentially earning somewhere in the mid- to high-$20 million range.

Additionally, a significant issue arises from the continuous online uproar sparked by the fact that Lively, Hoover, and other cast members did not take photos together with Baldoni at the New York premiere, nor do they follow him on Instagram anymore. Rumors surfaced of disagreements in creativity between Lively and Baldoni during filming, as well as accusations that he may have made insensitive remarks towards Lively and others on set. Neither party has spoken up so far, but it is known that Baldoni enlisted Melissa Nathan, a PR crisis communications expert, to help manage the situation.

High-ranking officials at Sony also got involved to support Lively, as some social media users criticized her for seemingly downplaying the film’s theme of domestic abuse. However, during the press tour, she frequently discussed this topic.

Tony Vinciquerra, Chair-CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, praised Blake and Colleen, along with numerous other women, for their tireless work in creating a thoughtfully crafted movie that sensitively addresses an essential topic. The film has resonated strongly with audiences. Vinciquerra commended Blake’s dedication and efforts in fostering dialogue about domestic violence, without mentioning Baldoni in the interview published on Aug 15 by The Hollywood Reporter.

“The executive praised Blake, expressing that they enjoy collaborating with her greatly, and their desire is to produce another twelve films together,” or simply, “The executive expressed their delight in working with Blake and their intention to collaborate on a further twelve projects.”
